Southern Italy region
Calabria is in the very South of Italy being effectively its toe, facing across to Sicily. It is a mountainous, upland region of unspoilt scenery providing easy access to its interior and surrounded by a coastline with miles of sandy beaches and rocky coves. Pace of life in Calabria is much more relaxed than in more northern regions of Italy. An area for 'a get away from it all' holiday.
Part of ancient Magna Grecia it has been ruled by Greeks, Romans, and Normans among many others over the centuries who all left evidence of their time in placenames, archaeological remains of ancient towns, buildings and even the wonderful Centro Storico of San Lucido and of course the wonderfull 'Bronzes of Riace' (5th century BC Greek statutes) in Reggio Calabria's museum.
In addition to the beaches it can provide an extensive range of outdoor activities - walking, hiking, horse riding and skiing (winter) in the mountains of the Sila and Aspromonte.
San Lucido Cosenza
San Lucido sits on a rocky out-crop almost on top of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Known as “The Jewel of the Sea” San Lucido's unique positioning provides wonderful views from all areas of the town, an atmospheric place to spend your days and evenings and a real sense of community for you to interact with local people.
San Lucido's beaches provide a wealth of variety for visits to the sea. From the wide sandy beaches of the south (including the beach to which this apartment has access) through the rocky outcrops ideal for snorkelling to the wide, shallow lagoons ideal for families, you are never far from the ideal beach for you. The most prominent of these are in Tropea 90 mins drive or Capo di Vaticano 90 mins drive. Tropea can also be reached by train from San Lucido 2 hrs. Beaches on the east coast are also accessible by way of Catanzaro 90 mins
On the landward side the tree clad mountains 'sweep down' to the sea and in themselves provide scope for other outdoor activities.
The town itself is serviced by a multitude of restaurants, pizzerias, ice cream parlours, coffee bars and bars, most of which stay open throughout the year. The 'Centro Storico' is a delight. It resonates with an atmosphere of tranquil calm. The narrow cobbled streets are lined with shops, bars and restaurants, all of which will give you the welcome you expect and deserve when visiting this wonderful town.
On clear days, at the top of the town, clear views of the Aeolian Islands are visible and from this standpoint it is easy to envision what the inhabitants of San Lucido must have witnessed over centuries as Greek, Roman, Byzantine, French, Spanish, Arabic and Turkish empires competed for control of the "toe" of the Italian peninsula.
Needless to say, San Lucido's history is expansive and it pre-dates the Romans and even the Greeks. San Lucido was inhabited by the "Bruti", a native tribe who battled the Greeks and then joined them in fighting to keep out the Romans. The name "San Lucido" itself, takes from a monk who inhabited the town's monastery. The literal meaning of "Lucido" is "lucid" and important religious monuments are an important part of the cultural landscape throughout the town.
