The Costa Calida/Murcia region

BIRD-WATCHING
One recent guest reported a total of 9 species of birds they had not seen before and 2 of these could not be found in any reference books. We have many imported birds visiting the rea, including the Yellow wagtail from the UK.

For far too long the autonomous region of Murcia has been overlooked by tourists as they have raced to the glamorous resorts of Valencia or Andalucía, but now, with the arrival of great-value flights and the desire for more ‘rural’ retreats, the area is opening its tourism doors. The region of Murcia is home to some of the most handsome towns in Spain - Lorca and Caravaca de la Cruz among them- as well as dozens of sleepy, castle-topped villages. It also boasts several regional parks, including the Sierra de Espuña, a natural park ideal for hiking, bird-watching and getting back to nature.

This healthy climate has caused Murcia to be known as the "Garden of Europe", producing a cooking enthusiast's dream of first-rate fresh produce all year round. It's not just the fleshy artichokes, the unbeatable, tangy tomatoes and the juicy citrus fruits fresh from the surrounding orange and lemon groves, but the succulent sea-food, freshly caught in the Mediterranean and the Mar Menor. Grey mullet roe is a regional speciality. The goat's cheeses and local bread are also mouth-wateringly good. A trip to any of the fabulous markets is an adventure in itself. For the shopaholics amongst you there are 2 brand new shopping centres, Thader and Neuva Condominia, both containing more than 200 shops and just 2 minutes away from each other. Murcia City itself also has a great shopping area.

Another beautiful city close by is Cartagena which sits on the Costa Calida within Murcia. As you enter the city, you will find within, a wealth of history and beautiful architecture. If you explore the port area you will find a mixture of old and new. The large naval base occupies a large area and throughout the city, the importance of the port will become evident with numerous buildings belonging to the navy, as well as a good naval museum. You must see the Naval Headquarters, Artillery Headquarters, Dockyard Gate and the Midshipman School.

There are plenty of parks and squares to rest in, surrounded by good restaurants and bars and you will almost certainly find life here very slow and easy going.

You will find the very helpful tourist office nearby in Santiago de la Ribera, next to the taxi rank.. They will supply you with a good street map to make your visit easier. Most of the sights can be found in one central area, all within easy walking distance.

The seashore offers a wide range of activities from sailing to windsurfing and good diving. The local countryside is perfect for hiking, horse riding and cycling. From Cartagena you can easily explore the coastal resorts of Mazarrón, Cala Cortina and Cabo de Palos or a little further north, the world famous resort of Mar Menor.

San Javier Mar Menor / El Mirador area

*** Several BLUE FLAG or Q (for quality) safe sandy beaches nearby *** 5 golf courses *** Short distance of shops, bars and local restaurants ***

San Javier is a small Spanish town with tapas bars, restaurants, shops, supermarkets and banks - all you need on your doorstep. The Church fronts onto the picturesque square where you can sit and watch the world go by. There is a park, museum and an auditorium where various concerts (including a Jazz festival) take place.

The nearby shopping centre Dos Mares has a large supermarket cinema (Spanish only at present, They have had some English films this summer on Thursdays.), fashion clothes shops, hairdressers and fast food outlets.
The town boasts its own football club. There is a golf driving range and at nearby Santiago de la Riberia there is a sailing school.

The town of Santiago de la Ribera is situated on the north shore of the Mar Menor, 5-10 mins drive away, excellent beach and promenade.

Santiago de la Ribera evolved from a fishing village into the premier summer holiday destination for well-heeled Murcian families, who built their houses along the coastline. Although Santiago de la Ribera has a modern, exclusive feel with an attractive esplanade flanked by palm trees that run the length of the beautiful sandy beach, it has not lost any of its original charm.

An excellent sailing club, a water sports school and scores of excellent bars and restaurants, together with the warmth of the local people, make this beautiful town a unique holiday destination.

Santiago to La Manga
There is a ferry taht runs virtually all year to La Manga, currently costs 4€ each way, you can take your bicycle on board to explore further.

On your return, opposite the Ferry terminal you will see a tradional Spanish Tapas bar, Vitoria, she makes all the dishes herself and they are great and very reasonably priced. Siit, relax, and enjoy the view of the bay before going home.

SUCINA
Although staying near Sucina will lead to many such quandaries, there is thing you'll never have to ponder again, whether it be morning, afternoon or evening: the WEATHER! Sucina enjoys over 3000 hours of sunshine a year - that's about 300 days a year. Amazing.

Sucina is a quiet Spanish village and rests 12km inland from Murcia's Mediterranean shore, near the Columbares Mountains. This allows you to enjoy the coast at will, but also enables you to retreat to serene surroundings when you want them. With new motorways accessing the surrounding region and the rest of Spain, along with nearby international airports,

Sucina is set serenely inland, though it's almost close enough to the Mediterranean to smell the sea. Less than a 10 minute drive from Murcia's Javier Airport, which is a short 2.5 hour flight from the UK.

This lovely traditional Spanish town is growing with the Polaris Worls Hacienda Riquelme Golf Course nearby and the prestigious Perleja Golf. Sucina is not only home to traditional tapas bars and coffee shops, it has recently opened BODEGA with restaurants, great service, fantastic selection of wine by the bottle or from their own barrels, menu is a mixture of traditional to Fillet steak, personally recommended. There are other restaurants planned, Red Hot Chilli restaurant and even a Fish and Chips, just recently another bar and coffe shop has opened.

In addition Lo Pagan has various tranquil beaches, ideal for boating and swimming.

In the 19th century, silver fever produced and attracted newfound wealth to La Union, the same as the Californian gold rush. The prosperity during this period is reflected in a number of Art Nouveau buildings in the centre of the town, such as the Casa Del Pinon, and the public market an authentic treasure.
