The Costa Calida region
Few regions have the good fortune to have a salt water lake next to the Mediterranean sea. This beloved, historically well documented area is much visited and is called MAR MENOR. It has a 73km coastline with beaches and transparent, shallow waters (the maximum depth is not more than 7 metres) and its surface area of 170 km2 makes the lagoon of MAR MENOR the biggest salt water lake in Europe.
In addition, for all of you ornithologists there is a protected bird reserve at San Pedro [5 km from house] with flamingos, hoopos and other Mediterranean species. Also at San Pedro is a free mud lagoon, something you would pay £100's for in specialist beauty parlour! See the local 80 plus year olds with smooth unwrinkled skin!
The average annual l temperature of the area is 17ºC, and the average for the months of June, July, August and September is above 21ºC. Winter is very mild, with the average temperature of the cold months not falling below 10ºC. Another point to emphasise is the scarce quantity of rain, with less than 300 sq. l. per year. The dryness of the area is obvious, above all because of its 320 days and 3000 hours of sunshine a year.
The San Javier Mar Menor / Santiago de la Ribera area
The lovely town of Santiago de la Ribera comes under the municipality of San Javier and lies within the Murcia region of Spain on the Costa Calida. Santiago de la Ribera is one of the beautiful and popular resorts lying on the Mar Menor ('Lesser Sea') which is the largest salt lake in Europe and boasts some fine beaches and shallow , safe bathing waters - ideal for family vacations..
Santiago de la Ribera grew from a small hermitage built in 1888 and is named after Saint James the Apostle. The hermitage was founded under the orders of Friar José Maria Barnuevo Rodrigo de Villamayor, who was a Knight of the Military Order of Santiago which is how the town came by its name.
This fishing village grew as a prime holiday destination for wealthy Murcians who built their houses along the coast. Santiago has a very lovely promenade flanked by attractive palm trees. Today Santiago is still popular with the Spanish for their vacations but also attracts tourists from all over Europe and although it has a modern air, it has still maintained its ‘fishing village’ atmosphere.
The promenade (El Paseo Colón) passes the Club Nautico and leads to an area known as La Ciudad del Aire ('City of Air')
Santiago de la Ribera has its fair share of fiestas and celebrations including the Three Kings (January), the festival of the Virgen del Carmen (July) and the huge Festival of Santiago (July). Santiago de la Ribera also holds the National Folk Festival. In addition the international jazz festival at San Javier in August
Santiago de la Ribera has about 4 kilometres of fine sandy beaches which can be enjoyed by holidaymakers. Santiago de la Ribera looks across the Mar Menor to the narrow strip of land known as La Manga - a famous and exclusive sports resort.
Santiago de la Ribera boasts a popular water-sports centre and sailing club and has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants
There is a large park / play area 200metres from the property, which is ideal for toddlers / juniors to play safely. The area is also ideal for cyclists ,as a result of a flat landscape near the coast with cycle tracks and a local canal in close proximity. Sailing , wind surfing, fishing, horse riding, walking and very safe bathing is all available within the locality.

The house was nice, clean and quite homely. To say it is a 12 minute walk from the beach is a little ambitious. It took us about 25 minutes and got a bit tedious towards the end of the holiday. Once we got to the beach it was lovely, the water was calm and very shallow, ideal for children. Not having a car, we spent most evenings in the house as everything was a little too far to walk especially with a 4 year old! Would go back again but hire a car next time....... Response: Thanks for the positive review ,we are very pleased you enjoyed your stay with us.Apologies for the walk to the beach being longer than expected ,my husband is 6ft 2" and has long legs ,he actually took 10 mins when he tried it and added 2 mins for people with "normal legs".We have now ammended the site to say 15mins .He says best practice is to stop at a bar on the way down and it makes even shorter!!!Thanks again. |
