Fort | 1 bedrooms | sleeps 3
La Grancia Country Resort is a romantic and charming 14th century fortress used as a "Grancia", a granary for the storage of the produce grown on the property. Perched next to the delightful hilltop village of Montisi, it overlooks the surrounding Tuscany countryside on a hill near Pienza, Montalcino and Monteoliveto Maggiore, where the landscape and its colours change continuously year round. This is the heart of the Sienese countryside, a hilly area largely devoted to the cultivation of wine & olive-oil, known as the "Crete Senesi".
Stretches of woods, vineyards, olive-groves, grain, sunflower, poppy fields and clay hills create an array of majestic colours, which reach their greatest beauty at twilight. The natural beauty of this area brings about a feeling of peace and tranquillity to all who visit. Ask any of the many artists that have come to make our village their home. We invite you visit us and become one of our many welcomed extended family members.
We have 4 apartments, one sleeping 4-5 people and three sleeping 2-3 people. All the apartments are elegantly furnished with Tuscan terracotta floors, beams and traditional furnishing. Our guests have the use of extensive gardens and a lovely private swimming pool with pergola and barbecue facilities with dramatic views over the valley and the countryside.
This page is dedicated to the apartment "Il Quartiere". The apartment, 65 m2, sleeps 2 people and is in the heart of the Grancia, on the second and more internal courtyard.
It used to be a private quarter (so the name), where the owner was retiring himself to relax, administer the Grancia and take important decisions in complete tranquillity.
The apartment consists of an entrance hall, a spacious living room with cooking area and fireplace and a bedroom with a king size bed. The bedroom has an en-suite bathroom with shower. Authentic period pieces give you the taste of another age and you can find yourself thinking of a Tuscany of other times.
The living room has access to a balcony, which, like all the windows of the apartment, overlooks the gardens and the valley, giving you a dramatic Tuscan vista.
We are delighted to show guests around some of the private areas of the historic building. Of particular interest are the rooms used by the Grand Duke of Tuscany in the 1700's, the tiny 1800's theatre seating 52 people (one of the smallest active theatres in the world) and the ancient cantinas sculpted out of the bedrock, where the wine was made and stored.
La Grancia offers its guests, upon reservation, the possibility of participating in the following activities:
Tuscan Cooking Lessons, Painting Lessons, Italian Language Lessons, Guided Tours in Siena and the province, Wine Tasting Classes.
For hundreds of years we have produced the finest wine & "extra vergine" olive oil using organic methods. This tradition is continued today and it is possible to taste and purchase our organic products (extra-virgin olive oil, wine and vinsanto D.O.C.) directly from us during your stay.
Our beautiful area offers various activities including hot air balloon rides and horse riding and you can enjoy many pleasant walks and excursions by bicycle.
Festivals, concerts, historic re-enactments and traditional folk events animates Montisi and the nearby villages each year.
Our small old theatre offers performances throughout the year.
Our village is served with bars, food-store, bakery, chemist's, and other small shops, all at a walking distance. Beside our property there is a very good restaurant preparing local cuisine.

The Tuscany region
From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.
Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, summer vacationers the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.
There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should start with Florence, then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking. The more you come to know the region, the more extraordinary Tuscany appears.
San Giovanni d'Asso
San Giovanni d'Asso is included in the splendid landscape of the Crete Senesi. The local white truffle is famous and valuable. Among San Giovanni d'Asso's celebrations is the "White Truffle Exhibit" held every year in November, during which visitors can admire the famous typical white truffles.
The village takes its origins from an ancient Longobard parish, built in the dawn of Christianity in Italy, on which was erected a castle. Its building work, between the XII and the XIV centuries, was on the project of Agostino and Agnolo di Ventura. At the beginning of the XII century the village was attested as a fief of Count Paltonieri of Forteguerra. In 1551 it was donated to the council of Siena, but subsequently a large number of noble families alternated at power. Still under Siennese sovereignty, the village passed to Ugolino Scolari, then to the Aldobrandeschi of Civitella.
In the same way, another village in today's council's territory was developed, that of Montisi, firstly autonomous, then during the last years of the 14th century annexed to the property of the Ospedale della Scala, that organised it as a “grangia”, or fortified farm, and that nowadays has become "La Grancia" Country Resort.
