Villa Leopoldo B is a splendid apartment which sleeps three people. It's 60

square meters (about 646 square feet) large, and it features a view to the hills.

There is a shared swimming pool and garden. The apartment is part of a small and

historical medieval castle. It has parking space and winter heating.

At Villa Leopoldo B you will have a double bedroom, a spacious living-room with

a divan bed, a kitchen, and a bathroom with shower.

The place

You will be in a fascinating medieval fort of high walls located on the top of a

green area. You will be on the outskirts of the hamlet called Montisi, and you

will also be in a part of Tuscany which is south of Siena and known as the 'Le

Crete Senesi '. All around you will see the green of vineyards and olive groves.

And from above the castle, you will have the view of a hilly landscape of

extraordinary beauty.

Le Crete Senesi are small hills which succeed as waves in the sea. Millions of

years ago, such hills were actually the bottom of the sea. Le Crete Senesi

offers a scenery of extraordinary colors: in spring time, under the blue sky,

you will see all hues of green shine over fields; in summer, you will see the

golden shades of ripe cultivations blossom; and in winter you will feast your

eyes on the extraordinary colors of the ploughed land, which change into hues of

yellow, red, or white. The tops of the hills far in the distance will unveil

here and there towers of medieval castles and elegant series of tall cypress

trees…

You will be in a peaceful place: the castle offers only four small apartments

for rental, reaching a total of eleven guests the most overall.

The castle has its own consecrated church, where weddings and religious

ceremonies are held.

The castle is the main house of a 45-hectare (about 111 acre) farm which

produces olive oil, wine, vin santo, and limoncello: all products that you can

taste and purchase in the place.

In the hamlet of Montisi, you will have a restaurant (30 meters or about 98 feet

away) and several small food shops. In Pienza, 12 km (about 7.5 miles) away, you

will have a big shopping center which is open even on Sunday. Shops and

supermarkets are found in San Giovanni d'Asso, 8 km (about 5 miles) away.

You need a car during your stay at Villa Leopoldo B. You will have a large

parking space at your disposal.

Its history

The small castle where you will stay dates back to 1330. It was built by the

Hospital of Santa Maria della Scala of Siena with the purpose of gathering and

keeping products coming from the lands of the region, specially wheat, wine, and

olive oil. Several administrators had been called by the Hospital to manage the

castle until 1775, when the Grand Duke of Tuscany, Pietro Leopoldo, decided to

sell the fort and its lands to people who were actually the ancestors of all the

eventual proprietors of the place.

And to welcome you as guests will be the direct descendants of such traditional

family: they will lead you on a visit to the bedroom reserved to the Grand Duke

Pietro Leopoldo, the living area, the great kitchen with the typical and

enormous fireplace, and the small eighteenth-century theatre. They will also let

you visit, if you want to, the vineyard. And the owner of the place will offer

you some creamy limoncello to be tasted; one that she herself prepares with the

lemons of the garden!

The castle dates back to the Middle Ages and is located on a street which was

once called Via Francigena. The castle also offered hospitality to pilgrims

coming from the north of Europe and who would stop in Rome.

Such tradition is still kept nowadays in the hospitality offered to tourists who

come to visit this splendid part of Tuscany!

The Tuscany region

Located in the heart of Italy, Tuscany is surely one of the most famous Italian landscapes. The essence of this beautiful region are its natural, artistic, and cultural heritage.

Bounded by the Ligurian and the Tyrrhenian Sea (two arms of Mediterranean), this region is divided into ten provinces, whose capitals are Arezzo, Florence, Grosseto, Livorno, Lucca, Massa-Carrara, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato and Siena. Florence is the capital city of the region itself.

Spring and fall are the best times to visit Tuscany, because the climate is mild. Bus-lines and trains connect the larger towns, but having a car would be a great advantage, and you would be easily able to enjoy the small towns and vineyards, which represent some of Tuscany’s strong points.

The “Chiantigiana road” is a must to see: it produces some of Italy’s finest wines. This is the colourful and legendary road of the “Chianti" region. The grape cultivation dates back to the Etruscan times. One of the biggest pleasures will be sipping different wines, at the wineries or at the wine bars scattered in the towns.

What about a drop in on “Mugello”? It is a countryside surrounded by oaks, chestnut trees and by the Apennines, This land of artists and painters have been source of inspiration in its farmhouses and colours. with kind people, authentic cooking, good wine, plus a great tradition in handicrafts.

Versilia is an area of 20 km sandy beaches located in the north of the region. The seaside with the colourful bathing areas is rich in bars and meeting places. Camaiore, Forte dei Marmi, Massarosa, Pietrasanta, Seravezza, Stazzema and Viareggio are the towns of this beautiful coast.

San Giovanni d'Asso

Let yourself be enchanted by Montisi: charming hamlet of San Giovanni d'Asso, in the area of Crete Senesi, near Siena, whose name probably derives from a temple situated 2Km away and dedicated to to the goddess Iside (worshipped by the Etruscans).

The charm and natural elegance of Montisi are even enriched by the small Music Academy sited into the ancient castle, dated back to the XIII century, which is the highest point of the village. You'll be able to enjoy great classical music concerts anytime of the year!

The lively 400 souls living here, make this place even more interesting: proud of their origins, the inhabitants of Montisi exploit the beauty of this sorcerous village with festivals and dinners involving everyone.

In the XII century Montisi was the castle of Counts della Scialenga, native of Asciano and belonging to the family of Cacciaconti that, in 1175, recognized the sovereignty of Siena. About 30 years later, the heads of Montisi's family were sworn in by the Scialenghi, at the head of Siena. This oath of allegiance provided that the Cacciaconti had to reside in Siena for at least 3 months a year and, in this way, the family slowed down the control of Montisi in order to take part in the political life of Siena.

The citizens of Montisi paid a rent to cultivate their own lands, but from that moment had the freedom to manage everything by themselves. This is how Montisi – or Monte Isi, as it used to be called – became a free commune in 1283.
