The Marche region
Those in the know head for Le Marche, which along with Umbria and Tuscany, constitutes the central region of Italy. Le Marche is situated in the east of the peninsula, and sits between the Adriatic Sea and the Apennine mountains. While the Adriatic coast is well known for its many excellent beaches, the interior remains unspoiled by tourism, and you will find towns and villages where the pressures of modern life seem worlds away.
Le Marche is a virtual treasure chest, rich in history, bursting with nature, art, folklore, and culinary traditions. Here you will find incredibly picturesque hilltop towns and villages enjoying panoramic views of lush, verdant valleys.
Renaissance palazzos and beautiful churches with fine works of art appear around every corner, and watching the impact of the changes in seasons on the mountainous countryside is a phenomenal experience and a privilege. Italy of course is well known for its wide and deep sense of culture and history. Le Marche is a major contributor to that, and within the region there are several prehistoric settlements, roman ruins and so forth. There are some 3000+ years of history and various sites provide evidence of prehistoric human Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements. There are settlements of the Picena, Roman and Barbaric civilisations, fifty-seven historical town centres (Centri Storici), with countless abbeys, castles and fortresses, patrician villas, some seventy plus art galleries and both archaeological and ‘theme’ museums, all of which play their part in preserving the rich history.
Food and Wine.
For a true taste of history, you will discover that the cucina povera (peasant food) is simply outstanding. Le Marche is well known for the quality of it’s local produce, and many restaurants do not have menu’s but prepare whatever is best on the day. Lunch is the main meal for most and typically includes an anti-pasti dish (starter), a prima (first) course of pasta and a seconda course of meat. Dolci, or dessert, is of course available for those feeling brave enough. Do not be intimidated though by the menu, and ordering only one or two courses is more than acceptable.
Depending where you find yourself at lunchtime will influence the choices available. If you have driven down to the coast you will find fresh seafood specialities such as fish soup (brodetto) together with a wide selection of caught that morning fish dishes. If you find yourself further inland, meat is the mainstay of the menu with poultry, beef, lamb, goat, rabbit, pork, and wild boar widely featured. For those of you who normally shop in supermarkets, you will find the range of fresh, seasonal ingredients, home-made pastas, local cheeses, truffles and bread extraordinary. Most villages and towns host weekly markets that provide an invaluable source for buying fresh food at more competitive prices. The Le Marche region also produces an extraordinary range of wines, including 13 varieties of DOC designated wines.
We are nestled in a beautiful valley so much of the surrounding landscaping is a mother nature intended - green rolling hills, woodland and streams at the bottom of our garden. Each of the properties have their own terrace and garden for relaxing in privacy and enjoy al fresco dining looking over the valley. We are planning a pool, lavender walk and other unique landscaping plans which will evolve with the property.
The fantastic beaches of the Adriatic Riveria are just over a thirty minute drive away down the S77. These include the more typical tourist destinations that prove popular with locals and tourists. If however you are looking for something quieter, there are many secluded coves a short distance from Civitanova. A drive down the coast is well worth doing as there are several traditional seaside towns worth spending time in.
If golf is a part of your holiday plans, there is a championship standard golf course around an hour's drive away in Sirolo ( in the middle of the Riviera del Conero). It is open all year, and has an 18-hole championship standard course, a 5-hole 'executive' course, a driving range and putting greens. The 18 holes are a a pretty challenging par 71 and you will probably need that all your clubs! Carts are available for hire, but it would be a shame to miss out on the pleasure of walking through such a magnificent setting. The course is normally quiet on weekdays (ideal for those here on holiday!), booking advisable at weekends. Great clubhouse with full range of good meals at reasonable prices available, friendly staff and comfortable surroundings.
Skiing is widely available in the Sibillini National Park, around a twenty minute drive away. Sassotetto, close to St Mary Magdalene, comprises one of the best, and most modern, ski areas in Le Marche. The resort boasts modern lifts serving a network of ski runs on a mountain side slope suitable for both beginners and the more experienced. The ski related activities that can be practised in the area range from downhill skiing to cross-country, through to snowboarding. Nivea station has a modern system of artificial snow on all slopes which can often extend the length of the ski season through till March.

"A perfect refreshing place to stay whilst discovering a new part of Italy"
A warm welcome waits you at this perfect retreat in unspoilt La Marche area of Italy. The views out of every window are stunning. If you want to write, draw, walk, relax or use it as a base to explore the area we couldn't recommend Sereno more strongly.
Thank you both for taking the time and for the great review. Hope to see you again! Keep in touch and good luck with the amazing charity work. Best, Karen

"Fantastic stay in Le Marche"
This being our fifth trip to Italy we decided on a holiday in the country. We stumbled upon Bella Valone and fell in love with the cottage and the surrouinding countryside. We arrived at the cottage with our two young girls and were greeted by Karen, the lovely and friendy proprieter. The immaculate cottage was fully stocked including crisp and clean linens, feathered pillows, food essential and a cold bottle of prosseco. The views were spectacular, the cottage was tasetfully decorated and comfortable for a family of four.
We spent our days exploring the Adriatic's fantastic beaches and stuffing our faces with some of the best seafood we have ever had at the waterfront tratorias. We would spend a few hours back at the cottage sitting outside, enjoying the views, the sunsets, drinking wine (the local whites were fantastic and cheap) and planning our meals. We visited several of the local restaurants and agriturisimos and highly recommend San Fabiano and Agra Mater (a bit overpriced but still very good). After dinner, we would visit one of the numerous fortified hilltop towns and buy gellato for our girls.
karen did a fantastic job of keeping up the property and making us feel welcome. She went above and beyond. Shedelivered little presents to each of our girls and let me tag along on a morning walk.
The cottage was surrounded by sunflower fields, fruit trees (which we helped ourselves to) and olive groves. It was nice to be so far removed from our busy lives in the middle of this fantastic spot.
If you are planning on visiting be sure to bring a GPS as the roads are typically Italian (meaning that they are like a twirling bowl of spaghetti). The coast is an hours drive away and the hilltop towns are within 10-15 minutes in either direction. I would suggets that Bella Valone install a larger and more permanent sign on the main roadway. A pool would have made this stay perfect (we would never have left).
We cannot say enough good things about Bella Valone. A fantastic cottage located in a somewhat undiscovered part of Italy. Loved it.
Your family were an absolute joy to have here! Thank you so much for taking the time to review the cottage. We are planning the pool for Spring 2012 and the signs should also be up. Hope to see you all again soon and thank the girls for the lovely drawing they left for me. Best, Karen & Grahame.

"Slice of paradise"
Bella Val'lone is a gem situated in the midst of waving hills of wheat and sun flowers interspersed with swaths of velvety green. The panorama is awe inspiring as is the beauty and care that went into restoring this amazing villa from the beautiful cream colored stone work, to the gourmet kitchen to the luxury bathroom and the comfortable beds with fine linens to name just a few. The air conditioning is a major plus and in our experience, a rare find in the countryside of Italy. The owners are lovely and gladly give helpful advice on the surrounding areas while at the same time remaining unobtrusive. Having visited Tuscany and Umbria a number of times, because of all of the buzz about the Le Marche area we decided to give it a try. Now we understand the buzz, it rivals any of the countryside that we've had the privilege to experience in central Italy. There are many interesting small towns nearby and the Adriatic is less than a forty-five minute drive. Don't forget to stop in the small beach town of Sirolo and swim in the blue green water and then walk up into this picture perfect town and have a gelato. Also, bring an extra bag as there is a shoe outlet area nearby and the prices are excellent. Bella Val'lone and Le Marche provided an experience that we won't soon forget.
Michele & Anthony,
Thank you so much for your wonderful review of your stay with us - we are pleased you enjoyed Le Marche and the cottage so much. We hope to see you in again in the future. Best, Karen & Grahame

"The Holiday You Dream Of"
What we liked best about this holiday was simply being there! The worst part was having to come home. Cottage Sereno at Bella Vallone is ideally situated amidst the most beautiful countryside with 360 degree views that take your breath away. It offers peace and tranquility but is still within easy reach of nearby towns and restaurants and even the coast which is well worth visiting. Being only recently renovated the property is in lovely condition and has the added luxury of air conditioning although you don't always need it as the cottage maintains a pleasant temperature throughout the whole day. The owners, Karen and Grahame, are more than happy to help in any way they can if you require their assistance with anything but otherwise will not intrude on your privacy. All in all, this is a wonderful holiday experience. You will not be disappointed.
Janice & Ian, Thank you so much for your review and for holidaying with us this Summer. The log stove will be installed for the Winter season so look forward to welcoming you again in the future! Your notes in the guest book have been really useful for other guests too! Best, Karen & Grahame.
