History of the building
In the famous Piazza del Duomo, in front of the Cathedral, near the Palazzo del Podestà and the little city theatre (XVI century), is set Palazzo Chigi, one of the most ancient and prestigious buildings in San Gimignano. Its history is strictly linked to that of the city. It is a patrician building, with a large front split into different levels. This is a typical example of a local house with tower, which in the Middle Ages was an important symbol of nobility and power. The Ancient Documentation of the building tells us that it was constructed in the first half of the thirteenth century.
Although the building takes the name "Chigi", the Chigi family was not responsible for its construction, but perhaps Count Antonio was the most important person that lived in it. The building belonged to the families Savorelli and Abbracciabeni, and later became the residence of the Useppi family. This powerful family had many successors, some of them were engaged in local policy (they were Guelfi), and others were dedicated to the lucrative saffron trade, which was the main activity in San Gimignano. Appreciated for its artistic beauty, the building is one of the richest and most important testimonies to the art and history of the town.

The Tuscany / Siena Province region

Tuscany (Italian: Toscana) is a region in Italy. It has an area of 22,990 km² and a population of about 3.6 million inhabitants. The regional capital is Florence.
Tuscany is known for its landscapes and its artistic legacy. Six Tuscan localities have been UNESCO protected sites: the historical centre of Florence (1982), the historical centre of Siena (1995), the square of the Cathedral of Pisa (1987), the historical centre of San Gimignano (1990), the historical centre of Pienza (1996) and the Val d'Orcia (2004).
The San Gimignano area
The city of San Gimignano took its name from the saint, then bishop of Modena, who helped the tuscan village to fight against the barbarians. The origins of the town date back to the Roman period, when the consul Silvio was forced to leave Roma with his followers. Because of this, the town of San Gimignano was anciently known as Silvia. Between XIII and XIV century, San Gimignano was known as a very important town, for its commercial activity as well as for its poetry, architecture and the arts in general.
The beautiful medieval village of San Gimignano is well known all over the world as one of Tuscany's treasures. It is the only example of a medieval city which has preserved through the centuries many of its ancient and beautiful towers. San Gimignano can always amaze the visitor with its charm, beauty and the unique atmosphere of its historical centre, which is almost intact. The ancient walls embrace the built-up area, with its square, streets and alleys that offer magical glimpses and unforgettable corners. Set on the top of a hill, San Gimignano dominates the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
San Gimignano is 40 km from Florence, 65 km from Pisa, 30 km from Siena, 28 km from the etruscan Volterra, only a few minutes from Chianti and one hour from the sea. Thanks to its central position in Tuscany, San Gimignano offers its guest the opportunity to spend a relaxing holiday in the town, or to go for a trip in the surrounding area. It is not only a peaceful and ancient place to stay, but also a perfect starting point to visit all major places in Tuscany: this makes San Gimignano one of the best places to spend a holiday.

“Perfect Location”
Just returned from 5 night stay in Il Duca, Fabio Apartments. Stay made extra special by the time given on arrival by Fabio and his daughter Sara. Lots of information and useful recommendations. Was so good to be able to stay in the centre of this historic town and a bonus to be able to have garage for the hired car. A great place to stay and would definately return.

“Two weeks in San Gimignano”
17 ottobre 2011
We have just returned from a great two week holiday in San Gimignano (15/10/11) and we would thoroughly recommend staying in Fabio Apartments. As others have said, Fabio and Sara couldn't have been more helpful in advising us of the best places to visit/eat etc and it was also nice to know that they were on hand should any problems have arisen. We visited Florence and Siena using the excellent local bus service and had meant to go elsewhere but without a car it would have been more difficult and as our weather was so good, we were more than happy to stay in San Gimignano. Do not worry about not having a car as you can hire one but to be truthful you can gain a lot by visiting all the woderful things that San G has to offer. Loved the Piaza St D'Agostino (really quiet), very pretty local theatre, wonderful views and pretty back streets as well as the many tourist attractions. Would recommend going to San Gimignano 1300 Museum of Archaeology first as it gives an amazing background on the history of the town. Lots of good places to eat and good to take advice from Fabio and Sara who booked the Chiribiri for us on the night of our arrival-very good Tuscan food at reasonable prices. Fabio and Sara couldn't have been more welcoming and made our stay all the more enjoyable.

“Excellent central reservation.”
9 ottobre 2011
We have just returned (08/10/11) from San Gimigniano and before we went we studied TripAdvisor, found this apartment and booked it. We were very pleased with the reports on both accommodation and restaurants, but suggest that you read the restaurants at the bottom of the list e.g. Enoteca Il Castillo as well as the good ones. It must be born in mind that San G and other hill towns are very steep with lots of steps and so not really suitable if you are unsteady on your feet.
The apartment (Contessa) is an excellent location right in the centre of the town opposite the Duomo so is very handy for all the sights and you are in the town when all of the day-trippers have left. The bus station is a short walk away and, as usual, you will need to leave a hire car outside the walls. Fabio and Sara were very helpful in collecting us from the station at Poggibonsi and explaining all the places that we might want to visit. The apartment is very comfortable for two people and provides full facilities including cooking (which we did not use).

“"Magical place to stay."”
9 agosto 2011
Fabio's apartment, I'I Duca in San Gimignano was wonderful. A very central place to stay to enjoy a beautiful medieval village and the surrounding Tuscan countryside. Fabio and his family were very welcoming and helpful. The apartment was very spacious and clean, with lovely views from the bedroom windows over the century old town and its towers. We hope to return with friends in the next few years.
It was great to have a secure carpark. To stay in San Gimignano at night after most tourists went home was a joy. Good resturants nearby.
