The Tuscany region
Tuscany is a top destination in the center of Italy and offers beautiful scenery and historic cities and hill towns. Places of particular interest and within only 1 hour drive from the apartments is Florence, Siena, Pisa and Chianti Classico wine region. Surrounded by olive groves and the vineyards of Chianti, Siena is one of the most beautiful cities of Tuscany. Set on three hills, the city is drawn together by winding alleyways and steep steps, whilst the Piazza del Campo stands at its heart, and the Duomo and St Maria della Scala serve as additional cultural landmarks. Famed for the "Palio", the annual historic horse-races that take place on 2 July and 16 August, it is also home to one of the oldest Universities in Europe, which ensures a vibrant Italian student atmosphere throughout the academic year. In addition to the bustling daily life of the streets and squares of the city, Siena offers many cultural events, concerts, cinema, theatre and a wide range of sporting activities.
Few geographical areas in the world can boast of the variety of environment that surrounds Siena. To the north, we have the richness of the Chianti landscape, woven with vines and olive-trees throughout the hills. Here also are beautiful towns like San Gimignano and Monteriggioni with old walls, winding streets and incredible views. South of Siena, the Arbia valley leads to the hill-top town of Montalcino, home to the famous Brunello wine. And the area La Crete stretches out, amazing visitors with its harsh rock formations and unique landscape. Westwards we head towards the coast, to captivitating coastline towns like Castiglione della Pescaia, and nature reserves like the area called Maremma. The Chianti area, between Florence and Siena, is one of the most beautiful countrysides in Italy and a famous wine production area.
Florence is one of the most important Renaissance architectural and art centers. Its Duomo and Baptistery are magnificent but crowded with tourists as is their large piazza. Florence has several interesting museums with many famous paintings and sculptures. There are also Medici palaces and gardens. Pisa, in northern Tuscany, is famous for its leaning tower but Pisa has much more to offer the traveler, including its medieval center, beautiful Duomo and Baptistery, parks, statues, the homes of Lord Byron and Shelley, and a walk along the river.
San Gimignano, which is only 20 minutes drive from the apartment, is a classic medieval walled hill town in Tuscany, famous for its 14 surviving medieval towers creating a beautiful skyline visible from the surrounding countryside. Truly a little gem, it is so precious that UNESCO has declared it a “World Heritage Site.” Walking through the Old City means plunging into the Middle Ages and getting a taste of what the city must have been like more than seven hundred years ago. A Tuscan town offering a wide choice of things to do, whatever the season, San Gimignano boasts a number of popular events and religious festivals, many of which are public holidays throughout Italy. The most noteworthy of these events include Liberation Day in April, Labour Day in May, Republic Day in June, and the very colourful Feast of the Assumption festival each August.
As summer arrives, the town of San Gimignano chooses to take full advantage of the fine weather. Each year in the middle of June, San Gimignano hosts its ever-popular Medieval Festival, which is known locally as the 'Ferie delle Messi'. This fun-packed event is something for all the family and features a true taste of medieval Italy, with jousting, juggling, entertainment and all kinds of acrobatics. Near San Gimignano you can also visit Volterra, an interesting hill town that sees fewer tourists.
