The Tuscany region
The Chianti area, between Florence and Siena, is one of the most beautiful countrysides in Italy and a famous wine production area. Florence is the capital of Tuscany.
Other important cities are Siena, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto, Massa Carrara. Siena is one of the most popular destinations for travellers to Tuscany. Siena is home to the famous horse race, the Palio, held in Siena's unusual central square.
San Gimignano rises on a hill (334m high) dominating the Elsa Valley with its towers. The town advanced in wealth and developed greatly during the Middle Ages thanks to the "Via Francigena" the trading and pilgrim's route that crossed it.
Such success lead to the flourishing of works of art to embellish and décor the churches and monasteries. The construction of the towers dates back to the 11th and 13th centuries.
