The San Gimignano area
This walled town nestled on a hill is a great attraction for its flavour of medieval times. Outside of summer the town becomes a bit more walkable for in the summer it overflows with tourists. The city is easily accessible and within spitting distance of Siena and Florence, the two other jewels of Tuscany.
The lofty 72 towers of San Gimignano show us what a powerhouse its families made the town in the Middle Ages. It was then called San Gimignano of the Fine Towers.
The town is embraced by fertile land which produces renowned saffron and is a ravishing landscape.
San Gimignano was first an Etruscan settlement which was given its name because of the bishop of Modena which is said to have protected it from Attila, the leader of the Huns. At the end of the 12th century is was already a commune in constant struggle with Volterra. Also the fight between Guelphs and Ghibellines fight reached it when its families divided the town for about 200 years. In this period of power struggle the majority of the towers were erected.
A plague in the 14th century struck the town and decimated its population leading to the deterioration of the power of its families, reason why it fell to Florences hands.
Porta San Giovanni in the south and Porta San Matteo in the north are two of the main entrances into this world of bygone times.
