BookThe Tuscany / Siena Province region
Tuscany is the jewel in Italy’s crown steeped in history with fantastic towns and cities and its passionate Italian people. Visitors to Tuscany come for many reasons. Many come in search of fine art, others to explore the extraordinary countryside. Gourmets and wine buffs descend on Tuscany to enjoy the simple yet wonderful cuisine and wine. Walkers enjoy the mountain paths, cyclists the rolling hills, the sea coast and islands. Students come to learn the beautiful Italian language and culture.
This picturesque region offers perfect opportunities for couples, families, or groups to enjoy the romantic ambiance. This part of Tuscany enjoys rolling hills which change from season to season. There are wonderful vineyards, sunflowers, olive groves etc. There is a lot to see and do in Tuscany, the difficulty is really where to start. Certainly most should start with Florence (about an hour's drive or by rail from nearby Poggibonsi) and is home to the world famous Uffizi museum, The Duomo and 'Ponte Vecchio' bridge. It is packed with historic buildings and beautiful statues can be found in many of the open squares. Then continue on to Siena and Pisa. The roll call of città di arte, cities of art, is daunting: Siena, Arezzo, Cortona, San Gimignano and Lucca are all striking.
Siena is of great environmental and artistic interest with a wealth of important monuments including: Piazza del Campo, one of the most beautiful medieval squares in Italy, Palazzo Pubblico (13th-14th century in Gothic style). The Campo is also famous as the site for the Palio (horse race) every July as well as other yearly events and is less than an hours drive. The opening scenes of James Bond's recent film "Quantum of Solace" was filmed here. You can wander down cobbled streets where you'll find little pizza parlours and quaint gift shops. There are many designer shops, restaurants and public gardens to enjoy.
The San Gimignano area
The beautiful medieval village of San Gimignano (15 mins drive) is well known all over the world as one of Tuscany's treasures. It is the only example of a medieval city which has preserved through the centuries many of its ancient and beautiful imposing stone towers. San Gimignano can always amaze the visitor with its charm, beauty and the unique atmosphere of its historical centre, which is almost intact. There are many cobbled streets and pathways that wind through the centre of this charming Tuscan town offering magical glimpses and unforgettable corners. Set on the top of a hill, San Gimignano dominates the surrounding Tuscan countryside.
There are plenty of signposted parking areas. Within the city walls there are beautiful little shops selling local food specialities and wines, clothes shops and many restuarants and ice cream parlours. There are regular festivals. Market day is Thursday.
The ancient walled Etruscan town of Volterra is one of the oldest Etruscan settlements in Tuscany with clear evidence of pre-Roman civilisation. It sits high on a hill overlooking Podere Torricchi. The City is awash with wonderful restaurants and bars as well as museums, churches, a theatre, sports centre, cinema and its own Roman amphitheatre which hosts music, dance and drama.
Throughout the year the City of Volterra organise a number of festivals including medieval pageants, jazz and traditional food and drink festivals. It is arguably the most exciting city in the Tuscan region.
Staying in Torrichi is ideal for those who want to walk, ride, cycle, fish or play golf....or do nothing more than relax and enjoy the peace and tranquillity. For Andrea Bocelli lovers, why not visit his home town of Lajatico and enjoy his concert at the beautiful open air Teatro del Silenzio. (20 minutes away from Torricchi).

If you want a base in Tuscany that seems in the middle of nowhere, but is less than an hour from all of the famous Tuscan towns/villages, and a lovely apartment that is in the middle of stunning countryside, then this is the place for you. The apartment is comfortable and homely with everything you could need plus more. The views from it, and from the pool are amazing, so too the sunsets. We had a wonderful holiday and found everything straightforward to book, find it, and manage a great 2 weeks there. We had a nice mix of visiting tourists sights (Florence, Pisa, Siena, San Gimignano), finding beaches (some stunning ones both North West and South west), and chilling out by the pool enjoying living in the heart of Tuscany. |

This is a gem of a villa, beautifully furnished and with every conceivable range of utensils, etc. Added to that is the lovely pool, fantastic scenery, tranquillity and of course those gorgeous sunsets. |
