S.Gimignano “the town of the beautiful towers”, which takes its name from the canonised Bishop of Modena who saved the town from the Goti invation, is situated in the province of Siena, 325 metres above sea level.
S.Gimignano stands on the site of a small Etruscan settlement dating from the Helleneistic period (third to second century B.C).
Thanks to the Via Francigena which runs through the town, it developed considerably in the sorrounding with an increasing number of churches and monasteries.
The road opened by the Longobards along the old Via Cassia and after controlled by the French became the main road to connect Rome with the North of Europe. In 1199 the town became a free commune, ridding itself of the domination of the Bishop of Volterra. The town during that period suffered from internal divisions between Guelphs and Ghibellins, causing a real civil war. Among the numerous diplomats sheltered in the town to solve this fratricidal struggle, which was present in all Tuscany, we remember Dante Alighieri, who was in S.Gimignano in 1300.
Inside the historical center one can admire the churches of S.Pietro, S.Iacopo, the Duomo or Basilica of S.Maria Assunta with the chapel of S.Fina, the Museum of religious art, the old and new Potesta's Palace and Pratellesi Palace. For the strategic position of S.Gimignano it's easy to reach artistic towns such as Florence (45 km), Siena (25 km), Volterra (25 km), Pisa (60 km), Lucca (70 km), with their small and large museums and churches, where one is sorrounded by beauty and perfection, discovering uncountable traces of art which developed greatly between the 14th and the 15th century. Also fascinating to visit are the turistic localities such as the upper part of Certaldo, Colle Val d'Elsa (10 km), Monteriggioni (15 km), Montalcino, Montepulciano and Pienza (60 km). It's also interesting to discoverr the old and suggestive medioeval castels and the old abbeys which mantein intact the fashion of the past.
