The Lazio region
Latium (Latin: L?t??m [?lati??]) is the region of central western Italy in which the city of Rome was founded and grew to be the capital city of the Roman Empire. Latium was originally a small triangle of fertile, volcanic soil on which resided the tribe of the Latins. It was located on the left bank (east and south) of the Tiber river, extending northward to the Anio river (a left-bank tributary of the Tiber) and southeastward to the Pomptina Palus (Pontine Marshes, now the Pontine Fields) as far south as the Circeian promontory. The right bank of the Tiber was occupied by the Etruscan city of Veii, and the other borders were occupied by Italic tribes. Subsequently Rome defeated Veii and then its Italic neighbors, expanding Latium to the Apennine Mountains in the northeast and to the opposite end of the marsh in the southeast. The modern descendant, the Italian Regione of Lazio, also called Latium in Latin, and occasionally in modern English, is somewhat larger still, but not as much as double the original Latium.
San Felice Circeo Mare
Monte Circeo or Cape Circeo (Italian: Promontorio del Circeo, Latin: Mons Circeius) is a mountain remaining as a promontory that marks the southwestern limit of the former Pontine Marshes. Although a headland, it was not formed by coastal erosion–as headlands are usually formed–but is a remnant of the orogenic processes that created the Apennines. The entire coast of Lazio, on which the mountain and the marsh are located, was a chain of barrier islands that was formed on a horst, made part of the mainland by sedimentation of the intervening graben.
Monte Circeo, as it is sometimes also called in Italian, is located on the southwest coast of Italy, about 100 kilometres (62 mi) south/southeast of Rome, near San Felice Circeo, on the coast between Anzio and Terracina. At the northern end of the Gulf of Gaeta, it is about 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) long by 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) wide at the base, running from east to west and surrounded by the sea on all sides except the north. The land to the north of it is 15 metres (49 ft) above sea level, while the summit of the promontory is 541 metres (1,775 ft). While the headland is quite steep and hilly, the land immediately to the east of it is low-lying and very swampy. Most of the ancient swamp has been reclaimed for agriculture and urban areas. The mountain, the coastal zone as far north as Latina, including the only remaining remnant of the swamp, and two of the Pontine Islands offshore, Zannone and Ponza, have been included in the Circeo National Park.
Mount Circeo is today included in the National Park of Circeo, instituted in 1934 on 5,616 ha (56.16 km2; 13,880 acres; 21.68 sq mi) over the territories of Latina, Sabaudia, San Felice Circeo and Zannone Island (minor island of Ponziane Archipelago).
Due to its coastal location, many of the activities that are possible during a holiday in San Felice Circeo will revolve around the beach and sea. Swimming, diving, fishing and snorkelling are just some of the water based leisure activities that it is possible to enjoy here. In addition to this, the nearby mountains offer good climbing and hiking possibilities, and tennis, cycling and golf are other ways to pass the time whilst staying at a holiday rental villa in San Felice Circeo.

"GREAT OUTDOOR AREAS, HANDY LOCATION, MODESTLY FURNISHED"
Set back from a relatively busy street, the villa was modestly furnished but comfortable.
Hosts Paolo and Alina welcomed us and provided us with cooking essentials and detailed
orientation. Shops, restaurants and cafes are less than 5 minutes' walk away. While the outdoor dining and relaxation areas were lovely, larger groups might find the interior of the house on the small side. The kitchen and bathrooms were also somewhat dark. Off street parking is certainly a welcome feature, though it is better suited to smaller vehicles. We did enjoy our stay in San Felice Circeo.
