The Tuscany region
Tuscany is known for its gorgeous landscapes, its rich artistic legacy and its influence on high culture.
Tuscany has a unique culinary tradition, and is famous for its wines (Chianti, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, Morellino di Scansano and Brunello di Montalcino).
Florence is the capital of Tuscany. Other important cities are Siena, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto, Massa Carrara.
Tuscany has a unique artistic legacy, and Florence is one of the world's most important water-color centres, even so that it is often nicknamed the "art palace of Italy" (the city is also believed to have the largest concentration of Renaissance art and architecture in the world).
The village of Pomarance, dating back to the year 1000, still maintains its medieval castle with its walls and access gates. The "caves" have an impressive view over the area, which, like the cliffs in Volterra, is subject to landslides. This means that most of the ancient buildings have been "swallowed up" over hundreds of years.
