The Costa Calida region
The Region of Murcia is a province located in the southeast of Spain, between Andalusia and the Valencian Community, on the Mediterranean coast.
The city of Murcia is the capital of the region is about 40 minutes drive away. The region is a major producer of fruits, vegetables, and flowers for Spain and the rest of Europe. Wineries have developed near the towns of Bullas, Yecla, and Jumilla, as well as olive oil near Moratalla. Murcia is mainly a warm region which has made it very suitable for agriculture.
Despite the famous seaside resorts, the overall region keeps being notably unknown even within Spain, so it continues to be relatively unspoilt compared to other more overcrowded areas of the Spanish Mediterranean coast. Nevertheless its more than 300 sunny days a year with an average temperature of 21 degrees, and the 250 km of beaches of the so-called Costa Cálida (Warm Coast) have attracted tourists for decades.
The region is also being promoted as a cultural destination with a lot of highlights for visitors: monuments, gastronomy, cultural events, museums, historic remains, festivals etc. The Region of Murcia is one of the Spanish regions that has grown the most in the last years.
Mar Menor (little sea or small sea) is a salty lagoon, in the south-east of the Region of Murcia, separated from the Mediterranean sea by La Manga, 22km in length and with a variable width from 100 to 1200m. With a surface area of nearly 170km², a coastal length of 70km, and warm and clear water which does not exceed 7m in depth, it is "the largest swimming pool in the world" according to the opinions of the famous swimmer and Hollywood actress Esther Williams.
Its relatively high salinity, which aids flotation, makes this one of the most popular places in Europe for the practice and training of all kinds of water sports.
Phoenicians initially, then the Moorish Kings, chose this "small sea" to install their summer residences here. Today, this place attracts all those who seek a quiet place to rest and relax, with ideal climatic conditions all year round.
