The Aegean Islands region
SAMOS, 480 square kilometres, the birthplace of Pythagoras, the home of muscat wine. Samos is laced with many beaches along the shoreline, following closely one after the other. Pure, clean waters for swimming.
Samos is also a mountainous island, widely cultivated and abounding in greenery, she has the highest mountains of all the Aegean Islands, but also many small valleys, beautiful ravines, waterfalls, and very fertile plains. The sky is a deep blue, equally delightful is the clarity and purity of the atmosphere.
Endless olive groves and rich green vineyards promote mixed feelings of admiration, wonder and surprise. The carpet of green is dotted everywhere with many brilliant white villages, thousand of rural cottages, old monasteries and country churches, next to which stand watch, like sentinels, thick oaks, tall cypresses and old plane-trees.
The air is full of the mixed fragrances of thyme sage, myrtle and other flowers. Bushes and trees cover all the cultivated areas, both fertile and rocky.
The products grown locally on the island are excellent. First of all is her wine, the famous sweet muscatel, her oranges, succulent figs, her oil and olives.
Samos Island / Manolates area
The villa is reached by a scenic mountain road and is located half-way between Vourliotes and Manolates.
MANOLATES beautiful village, stunning view. A community of artists has established itself here and their works can be bought in the shops along the pedestrian street road leading to a picturesque village square and cafe/ restaurant "Lucas".
VOURLIOTES dotted with white houses perched on the mountain-side. The road-side fountain with its pure mountain water is a meeting point and oasis for villagers and hikers to rest and quench their thirst. Genuine village square with restaurants. The Moni Vronda monastry, whose festival (September 8th) attracts Greeks and tourists from all over the island.
PNACA on the way to Kokkari, a restaurant in the shade of plane trees along the old paved road to the sea, (today used by mules going back up to the village loaded with hay). Simple but very good Greek food for lunch or diner, try as a digestive the local home made alcohol "Souma" .Charming little church in the restaurant's courtyard.
KOKKARI offers very good wind surf, be careful not to find yourself in Turkey! A highly lively touristic village by the sea, myriad of shops, restaurants and bars, in particular, the "Kalimera bar" on the sea-front for a sunset-drink.
Along the marina particularly noteworthy are the "Thalassa restaurant " (very good Thessalonic food) or " Il Bassilico" (for an Italian twist). Night-club out side the village.
SAMOS TOWN Tennis court., gym centre. The archaeological museum contains works of Ionian art. Its "Kouros" is a exceptional example of Ionian sculpture, his wife the " Kore " is at the Louvre in Paris.
EXCURSIONS TO KUSHADASI IN TURKEY stay at hotel " Caravanserail" by the souks, Saturday night Turkish dances at the hotel or lots of fish restaurants by the harbour, next morning hire a taxi for the day, to visit the fabulous site of Ephesus and the house of the Virgin Mary. Can also be done as a day-excursion. Boat at 5.00 pm back to Samos (crossing time: 1 hour).
PYTHAGORIO, watersky, jet sky, scuba, natural and well protected harbour where in summer lots of yachts anchor. A day excursion to close-by sandy island of " Saminapoula " or Patmos island.
