The Grand Massif region
There is something for everyone in the Haute-Savoie Region. As well as the fantastic skiing, climbing, walking, cycling and rafting there are also several great towns and cities within an hour’s drive, Geneva, Annecy, Chamonix and Aosta (Italy). Although famous for the Winter pastimes the region offers so much in the Summer. Excellent sunny weather makes walking and cycling a joy especially when all the wild flowers are blooming.
Following the Winter, the Spring comes and the snow melt and the mountains with its wild flowers and waterfalls, burst into life, lifting the spirit with their beauty. The Autumn also provides opportunity for some fantastic walking with the gorgeous colours of the fall and the high pressure system allowing normally dry weather to remain over the region creating fiercely blue skies. Come and explore this region of the French Alps, you may never want to leave!
The Giffre Valley is one of those special places that creates perfect holidays during any season. Surrounded by a vast protected mountain area and classified as one of the six most beautiful areas in France this area is not to be missed. It simply is a fabulous place to come and visit.
In the Winter we have 265 kms of skiing suitable for all levels from the beginner to the adrenaline junky! The exceptional snow sure cover is due to our proximity to Mont Blanc. Activities aside from skiing are; Dog-sledding, ice skating, 90 km's of cross country (Nordic) skiing and snow shoeing. In the Summer there are many local cultural and music festivals to complement the wide array of outdoor activities.
Activities such as; rock climbing, including the exhilarating Via Ferratta, swimming in the local lake and pool, volley ball, tennis, paragliding, horse-riding, ballooning, hiking, mountain biking, rafting, helicopter rides over Mont Blanc, Golf and canoeing....quite simply too many to list!

we stayed in Chalet apartment Etoile. Very good setting in village to reach gondola for ski slopes and perfect short walk into village for amazing restaurants. Etoile apartment suited 4 adults perfectly with a very well equipped kitchen and cozy rooms. Gilles was on hand to help with any queries we may have had (that was none by the way). Parking was no problem outside the apartment. We were given very clear instructions for driving from Geneva that made our trip very unstressful.

"Excellent apartment in a lovely village!"
We (2 couples) rented this apartment the week of New Years eve, and both Samoens and the apartment exceeded our expectations! The apartment is finished to a very high standard with an open log fire and under floor heating throughout the ground floor (amazing!). The bedrooms are of good size and located on the first floor, both with en suites. The master bedroom (the one with a double bed) also has a balcony. There is a separate toilet on the ground floor - very handy! There is a garage with washing machine and tumble drier under the apartment itself, so the property is elevated, providing a lovely view overlooking the village and mountains, which can be enjoyed from the two balconies. The kitchen is equipped with everything you need, including a dish washer. We also got the feeling of the apartment being more spacious than from what you can see from the pictures on the website. Samoens as a village was actually bigger than we expected! There are plenty of restaurants and a few bars. The week we were there is one of the busiest weeks of the year (we were told the population increases from 2000 to 20000 that particular week!) so if you want to go out for dinner, booking a table ahead is strongly advised. We went to a lovely little French place for Raclette one night, which I can recommend! I can't remember the name, but as you walk down the hill from the apartment towards the village, there's three restaurants in a row on your left near Inter Sport, and I think it's the one in the middle. We also got into a habit of having crepes when returning to the village after skiing. Again, I can't remember the name, but it's next door to a bar called Aspen, and they make lovely savoury and sweet crepes. As for the skiing, and with us being Scandinavian, we tried both cross country and 'normal' skiing. There's a cross county track starting from the village, near the Tourist information centre, with tracks ranging from a couple of km to 1,8 km. There's also a couple of shops where you can rent cross country skis for 8 euro/day. I didn't get a chance to ski down hill myself as I pulled a muscle doing cross country on the second day, but my friends did and said the skiing was really good and the ski lift is just 5-10 minutes walk from the village. Samoens is located just over an hours drive from Geneva airport. We decided not to rent a car, but the owner of the property very kindly provided us with contact details to an Englishman who lives locally and does airport transfers. He also did a tour of the village upon arrival which was really useful. We managed fine without a car the whole week. We did a lot of cooking in the flat and there are a few small food shops in the village where we did most of our shopping, as well as some lovely cheese and charcuterie shops. There is a larger supermarket (Carrefour) 1-2 km outside the village - we walked there one day and it took about 20 minutes. The whole booking procedure of the apartment and receiving the keys was seamless. Upon arrival, a local Frenchman met us at the property, showed us around the place and provided us with keys and asked any questions we had. Similarly on departure, he came to check the property and return the deposit (we decided on cash deposit). Overall - a fantastic place to celebrate the New Year, or any other time of the year!
