The North East Brazil / Bahia region

Salvador is Bahia state's capital city. It was founded in 1549 and quickly became the premier city in Brazil, and the second most important city in the Portuguese Empire after Lisbon. Salvador prospered in the 17th and 18th centuries; it was the country's major port with a significant portion of Brazil's sugar, gold and diamonds passing through the city. Today the wealth of impressive colonial architecture is evidence of the city's rich history. Well restored enclaves of the old city remain with cobblestone streets, colourful mansions and dozens of ornate Baroque churches.

The seductive atmosphere of this wonderfully decadent city is best soaked up on foot, within the narrow streets and markets, the best of which is the Mercado Modelo arts and crafts market. One of the city's more unusual experiences is to ride the Elevador Lacerda, an Art Deco structure housing old electric elevators that carry passengers between the port and the old historic part of the town, Pelourinho.

Salvador is Brazil's most Africanised state, a result of the thousands of slaves that were brought here 400 years ago to work in the sugarcane plantations. The fusion of African and Latin cultures has given Salvador a unique brand of magic that is particularly evident at the city's many festivals. Most notable is the massive 'Carnival' usually in February which attracts two million revellers from all over the world and easily rivals the better known Rio Carnival. If Rio is famed for its elegance and sophistication, Salvador is the opposite; it's all about the drums!

Salvador / Praia do Flamengo area

The only problem with Salvador's excellent beaches is that you are spoilt for choice. The range extends from calm beaches ideal for swimming such as Praia do Flamengo, to wild beaches facing the Atlantic Ocean such as Aleluia beach which attracts surfers. Some beaches are surrounded by coral reefs, forming natural swimming pools that are ideal for children. The beaches are the location for many of Salvador's great festivals, including the New Year festivities.

Turn left out of Casa Flamengo and within 30 seconds you're at a stunningly beautiful lagoon where you can go fishing, take a boat out or simply relax while watching the sun go down. Turn right and you're just a minute away from one of the most popular beaches in Salvador. Known for its warm and calm waters, Praia do Flamengo is favoured by swimmers. Though it is relatively peaceful during the week, it has an incredible atmosphere on weekends, especially on Sundays when it is full of the locals eating, drinking and dancing the night away.

Normally you should expect to pay about £5 to £10 a head but you can eat out for much less. Even at the very top end you will seldom pay more than £50 a head. A list of our favourite restaurants will be waiting for you at Casa Flamengo. Make sure you try out our favourite 'Pereira' in Barra. Also trying Salvador's traditional dish 'Moqueca' at the famous Yemanja restaurant is a must.

Further details

Manoel, our caseiro, resides on the property in his own quarters separate from the main house. He ensures 24 hr security as well as attending to the garden and all house maintenance.

Astle is our management agent in Salvador. She will be responsible for the prompt delivery of the keys to Casa Flamengo on your arrival and the safe keeping of your security deposit during your stay. On your departure she will carry out an inventory check, collect the keys and return your deposit. Most Brazilians only speak Portuguese so communication can be problematic. We have employed Astle, who is multilingual; to be your main point of contact should you need urgent assistance during your stay. Although she is not a tour guide she will be happy to give advice on preferred taxi services, key attractions and the best restaurants that Salvador has to offer.

There are a few numbers in the information pack of English speaking taxi drivers. Our favourite is Vilela who is very friendly but be prepared for your Portuguese lesson while travelling with him.
