'Tamar View Cottage', an 18th cent terraced cottage in a picturesque setting on the banks of the Tamar river in Calstock village 5 miles from Callington, East Cornwall and 8 miles from Plymouth. 16 miles to beaches at Whitsand Bay & Portwrinkle. Calstock is renowned as an exceedingly pretty and unspoilt victorian village, the holiday cottage being down by the river & quay with lovely views over the Tamar Estuary. The setting is enhanced by the spectacular aquaduct, many colourful sailing boats during the summer and the steep wooded valley sides sloping down to the river. A truly scenic setting with some beautiful sunsets over the water. Tamar View Cottage is a hundred yards from the waterside Tamar Inn with restaurant (good food)and the Riverside Cafe and waterfront.Views over the river from bedrooms 1 & 2. A great favourite with walkers; lovely walks along the estuary, leading from the cottage, in both directions. Amble down to the riverbank & try fishing in the river for trout. Take the riverside walk (about 1 and a half miles) to National Trust Cotehele House, gardens and Quay. Other interesting places in this highly scenic locality, which is part of the beautiful Tamar Valley. Cotehele House, Weir Quay, Morwellham Quay are all within easy reach. The cottage is the brown pebble dashed cottage in the photo next to the white cottage, with the white chimney visible above and has a tiny front patio area with gate and seating. During the summer the pleasure steamer comes up once a day landing the passangers on Calstock quay. Holidaymakers tell us they have taken the scenic train ride from Calstock to Plymouth in the morning and returned by the pleasure steamer in the evening. Linen inclusive. Electric inclusive. Electric woodburner affect heater in lounge and other electric radiators throughout. A few 100 yards to free parking in village car park, on the quay (always plenty of room). 1 small dog welcome.

The West Country region

Calstock is famous as an unspoilt and perfectly preserved old victorian village. It lies about 8 miles above Plymouth on the banks of the river Tamar, on the Cornwall side, amidst the Tamar Valley- a designated area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. A really pretty setting with the old pubs and cottages straddling the waterfront, towered over by the old aqueduct. Beautiful views over the river and the Tamar Valley. Calstock is where the river pleasure cruiser trip from Plymouth ends- the occupants tumble out of the boat onto the quay front where they enjoy a stroll around the village and refresh themselves in the village's riverside cafes and pubs. There are walks along the river in both directions but a truly spectacular walk is the 2 miles walk along the riverbank (often wooded) , downstream to National Trust Cotehele House and Quay (there is a café by the quay). Visitors to Calstock often try the round trip to Plymouth by the pleasure boat river cruiser or by combining the trip via the scenic railway journey. With its proximity to the historically prosperous city of Plymouth this area has a large number of National Trust houses and gardens and other properties. Plymouth is a tourist city where you can visit the famous waterside areas of the Barbican and the Hoe, historic attractions such as the Elizabethan House, Plymouth Aquarium (the larget in Europe) and shop in Plymouth's new Drake Circus Shopping Centre. The excellent sandy beaches at Whitsand Bay are 14 miles away, A good place from which to explore East Cornwall, further into Cornwall, or to reach out to the north coast, also with the option of visiting into Devon and Dartmoor.
