The Costa Dorada/Tarragona region

La Costa Dorada (Daurada in Catalan) The 20 towns that make up the Costa Dorada cover a marine littoral 216 kilometres long, 786 hectares of spacious beaches with clean fine sand and transparent shallow water.
In between the sea and the mountain range there are wide areas filled with peaceful towns and farmlands, where vineyards, olive groves, carobs, hazel trees and almond trees grow, and occasionally even vegetable gardens. The whole area, between; hotels, camping sites and apartments, has capacity for over 500,000 tourists, and receives an average 3,500,000 visitors per year.
The large tourist centres along the beaches of the Costa Dorada have developed in recent times upon the old fisherman's quarters in old towns mainly dedicated to agriculture, and sometimes located atop the hills near the sea in order to protect themselves from attacks by corsairs and pirates in earlier centuries.
Tarragona deploys its splendid monumental collection that summarizes it millinery cultural evolution....
The proximity of these towns, many of them built around the silhouette of an ancient castle, contributes to balancing and humanizing the surroundings, and increases the possibilities of amusement and the use of all sorts of complimentary services for tourists.
This bucolic atmosphere contrasts with the urban dimension of the historical city of Tarragona, which deploys its splendid monumental collection that summarizes it millinery cultural evolution.
Inland one can easily reach places and towns with a great personality and historical interest (such as Reus, Valls, Montblanc, Tortosa) and great medieval monasteries: Poble, Santes Creus and Scala Dei, as well as picturesque landscapes (Prades, Siurana), rugged mountain ranges with big game reserves (Tivissa, Cardo and Ports de Tortosa), and the unique delta of the Ebro river, with its labyrinth of ditches and lagoons and the facilities it offers for wild fowl hunting.
Several areas with common features can be distinguished along the Costa Dorada. First of all there is the northern area, from Cunit to Mont-roig, with the widest beaches of all; then Vandellos, L'Ametlla de Mar and L'Ampolla, with narrower, steeper beaches, influenced by the nearby mountains; the Ebro delta, with long wide beaches and very fine sand typical of alluvial lands; and finally, from the delta to Les Cases d'Alcanar, long beaches of average width and clean heavy sand.
Discover Tarragona in La Costa Dorada
Tarragona is the capital of the county of Tarragonés.
This city was declared "World Heritage City" by UNESCO on the 30 of November of 2000, and from that point the city has made an intense effort to be more and more perfect to everyone!
In the year 45 BC and after constructing its walls and a port Julio Cesar designate this colony with the name of "Colonia Urbs Triumphalis Tarraconensis".
It is a splendid millinery city with a population of 109,557 in habitants. It presides, due to its importance and beauty, the entire area of the Costa Dorada. It was the origin of the Romanization of the Iberian Peninsula and afterwards of its Christianization. It boasts a unique Roman and medieval monumental collection. The Gothic Cathedral, the Roman walls and towers - with Cyclopean bases - and other historical buildings and remains can be visited following the exceptional Paseo Arqueologico (Archaeological Avenue), atop which one can overlook a magnificent panorama of the interior district. There are plenty and excellent beaches: El Miracle, under the mirador of Rambla Nova, known as the "Balcony of the Mediterranean", La Arrabassada,2 km away, La Savinosa and Playa Llarga, a huge beach, one of the best on the Catalonian coast.
The Roman Circus of Tarragona is one of the most important places in our visit of Tarragona, one of the most interesting Archaeological sites and one of the most well preserved of the old Roman Empire.
Created during I A.D. this place played a huge role (leisure of course) during the empire domain
here was the place were carriages races pulled by horses were held. It had a capacity of 20.000 spectators.
Today one can still see some of the walls and vails that composed its structure.
The Roman Amphitheatre of Tarragona is located at the end of "Rambla Vella" and the "Pg. de les Palmeres", the Amphitheatre is dated from the II. BC The whole place is got capacity for 13.000 spectators; they have been reconstructed to its original state. This was the place for the gladiators and for the hunt of wild animals. This was also the place were the sentenced were finally executed.
Over its foundations were built a Visigoth basilica (VI) and then a Roman church (XII).
In its interior one can still admire the remains of the church of "Sta. María del Miracle".
Open air monument.
The Tarragona Archaeological Walk goes along the most well preserved parts of the roman Archaeological walls surrounding Tarragona centre, including the "Minerva", "Cabiscol" and the "Arquebisbe" towers.
All these towers were constructed between the 3rd and the 2nd century B.C. on top of two lines of stones but on the Arquebisbe tower there were as many as 7 lines of stones.
**National Archaeological Museum - Museum
Tarragona National Archaeological Museum is the oldest museum in Catalonia of its kind. In its expositions salons it has archaeological pieces of the antique Tarraco, also has some pieces from the Romanization period. One can go along its different salons as you go up to the last floor of the museum.
Salon number 1 has part of the roman walls from its basement, so one can really see the magnitude of those huge walls as one go out of the museum and see the remaining of the walls.
In salon number 3 there is the famous "Medusa mosaic". In salon number 4 one can see the every day object used during the roman period and in salon number 5 an example of "Tarraco and the sea", the immense relation of the city with the sea.
Located some 4 Km from Tarragona, this magnificent construction was built to bring water from the nearby Francolí river to the city. It has a total height of 27 meters and it is 217 meters long. Open air monument and not entrance needed. It is a "world heritage monument". Scipio s tower. Scipio s funerary family monument. Open air monument. No entrance needed.
N-340, Km 6, going to Barcelona.
This funerary monument consists of three well defined parts or blocks. The last block are figures that represent probably the famous person buried in this place. It probably lasted with a pyramid shape. The Scipions were a powered family with strong participation on the senate and this is just one of the ways they have to show that power. It is considered a "world heritage monument".
Bará's Arch. Open air monument. No entrance needed.
20Kms from Tarragona
The responsible of the construction of this roman triumphal arch was a powerful and well known man called "Lic Licini Sura" by the end of the 1st century. This is a 12 m high honorific construction and has Corinthian capitols. It was recently restored. This is a "world heritage monument".
The Cathedral of Tarragona is located right in front of the Gothic porches and next to the University of Tarragona. Here you will see the most important collection of tapestries in Europe. It also has gothic paintings.
Universal Mediterranea is a Universal Studio's theme park on the Costa Daurada, the only one operated by the group in Europe. Universal Mediterranea is made up of the Universal Studios Port Aventura theme park, the Costa Caribe water park, the Hotel El Paso, the Hotel Port Aventura and a Beach Club.
The park has five themed areas: the enchanting MEDITERRANIA, exotic POLYNESIA, the ancient civilization of CHINA, festive MEXICO and the wild FAR WEST. The park has a multitude of exciting rides, colourful shows, a wide variety of restaurants, etc., in short - it is a fantastic experience for the whole family.
Walter Lantz's popular cartoon characters, Woody Woodpecker and his companion Winnie, together with the muscular Popeye and his girlfriend, Olive Oyl, the Pink Panther, and other friends, are your hosts in the park.
The 4-star, Mediterranean-themed Hotel Port Aventura opens its doors for the first time in March 2002. The Hotel El Paso also has 4 stars but will have a Mexican setting and will open in July. The guests of both hotels will have exclusive services, such as a private beach area.
The water park has an area of 4,200 square metres of artificial beaches, a dozen attractions and a covered area for winter.
Aqualeon- Aquapark is open air safari with more than six hundred animals roaming free. Incredible shows with marine animals, intelligent birds, birds of prey and reptiles. The water park has spectacular slides, a giant-wave pool, a long tube, straight slides, river rapids, twist-twist and children's pool. Other facilities include a mini zoo, nature school, beach volleyball, a la carte and self service restaurants, cafés and souvenir shops.
Aquopolis in La Pineda (Vila-seca) has a full range of aquatic attractions: the 50 km per hour Kamikaze slide, the fascinating and surprising Black Hole, Aquamania - a triple slide that combines thrills and laughs, straight slides, twisting slides, river rapids, a wave pool, a hydrotherapy pool, and an American swimming pool with nets, rings, pulleys and other fun things. There is an area for small children with their own special attractions and a games area for all the family with minigolf, bumper boats and other fun and games.
The Costa Dorada is full of costal towns that are a total boiling of tourists services during the summer...
We give you some well known examples...
Salou is without any doubt one of the best known places in the whole Costa Dorada, it is also known as "Beach of Europe".
Salou has won that title because all the quality test that have passed during the years mostly on the quality of its sand and its sea water.
Salou is a totally modern resort, chock-a-block with high-rise hotels, bars and entertainment facilities all geared to satisfy the every whim of the international visitor. There are a huge number of pubs, clubs and discos along with a wide range of water sports and other leisure activities including golf, paragliding, hiking, cycling and horse riding. Nightlife in Salou is one of the liveliest of all the Spanish coastal resorts. Whether you want traditional flamenco, a Mexican meal, karaoke or all-night discos you'll find it all here.
Mont-roig del Camp. 10 Km from Cambrils, is an agricultural town in which the famous Catalonia's painter "Joan Miró" spent many of his childhood years.
The church of St. Miguel is of Gothic style, the construction works began in 1574.
Mont-roig is very close to places like "Riudecanyes" (with the Riudecanyes swamp), and the fantastic "monastery of Escornalbou", another fantastic route you may want to do.
Another fantastic village well worth a visit is on the other side of the county, on the Mediterranean side and it's called " L'Ametlla de Mar", nowadays it is still a fisherman's village that has grown enormously in the last few years thanks to the huge tourist growth.
Close to L'Ametlla de Mar, we can find L'Hospitalet de l'Infant. In 1346, L'Hospitalet de l'Infant was born thanks to Peter IV, and his mother Blanca d'Anjou who founded the old hospital which bore the name.
To the south of Hospitalet de l´infant is the Naturist Beach of TORN. This beach is a paradise for the European families who are looking for peace and quiet, contact with nature and who want a high degree of comfort without being bothered in any way.
The Salou / Cambrils area
Cambrils is a world apart from frantic Salou. Parts of the town are still very Spanish in character with narrow, cobbled streets, ancient buildings and typical tapas bars. The resort retains all the charm of a small fishing village and boasts some world-class seafood restaurants. Sit by the quayside with a pre-dinner drink in the early evening and you'll be able to watch the day's catch being landed.
Cambrils is the perfect place for those of you who want to spend some quite days relaxing on the beach; this town has 9 km of sandy beaches for all you sea lovers!!
One can now walk from Cambrils in this almost perfect sea side walking path of few kilometres long which now connect until "Salou´s fuente luminosa", and never loose sight of the sea.
A wonderful place for people who enjoy walking
