The Salou area
For the year 2012, PortAventura is in full motion to construct one of its newest attractions that will break the skyline of PortAventura with PortAventura's newest Shambhala Ride. Only the brave know what lurks in the long journeys that take them over huge lakes and mountains, climbing to new heights, abysmal falls and paths through dark tunnels, a unique adventure and more spectacular than any other roller coaster ride that you have ever known. It will be the tallest roller coaster standing at 76 meters high and with the longest fall in Europe of 78 meters... and will reach a speed of 134 km/h.
Opened in 2011, SésamoAventura the newest themed area of PortAventura, where the rides for the young and the old will let you have a great time. Come to the new area of the theme park and discover all its magical inhabitants: Bert, Ernie and all the Sesame Street characters are waiting for you! Ride the attractions and lose yourself in the fantasy world of the new area in the theme park. Fly like a bird on the aircraft SésamoAventura CocoPiloto (Pilot Grover). Navigate through the canals of SésamoAventura with the new ride of PortAventura, the Magic Fish. Experience a fascinating journey by train while you meet the characters who live in SésamoAventura in the funny farm attraction of Elmo. And for the fearless, hop on to Tami Tami, a roller coaster that will delight children of all ages.
Salou has become one of the main tourist areas of Costa Dorada, with over 2 million visitors a year attracted to its hot, golden Mediterranean beaches. Salou has become a popular family resort due to the safe nature of it’s shallow watered beaches, friendly locals, Port Aventura theme park and entertainment facilites.
The popularity of Salou as a holiday resort is largely built on its superb beaches. The coastline of Salou has 8 main beaches, each with fine golden sand and inviting shallow waters due to the long beach and slow tide. The beaches themselves are quite varied, some beaches consisting of long plains of sand, some mixing with the beachfront hotels and bars, while others have coved areas sheltered with pine trees giving a more intimate feel. The Ponent Beach joins with neighbouring resort Cambrils, while Llevant beach, the largest in Salou, has specially designated areas in the summer for sporting activities. Capellans Beach is quite small but a very attractive open beach, while Llenguadets and Llarga beaches are littered with small coves and are shielded by pine trees. Penya-Tallada, Cala de la Font and Cala Crancs beaches are all quite small but have a very tranquil atmosphere.
Shoppers in Salou are spoilt for choice when it comes to places to spend. Shopkeepers in Salou pride themselves on providing a good friendly service. While Salou as a whole has many areas to buy, the Old Town area contains many shops that are as old as Salou has been a holiday resort. The Jaume I Promenade and Major Street areas are more modern shopping areas, containing many restaurants and terrace cafes underneath a canopy of palm trees. The main shopping area for many locals is the Municipal Market area, containing many year-round businesses including food shops, fashion boutiques and restaurants. The weekly market here is a good chance to see what traditional Salou has to offer.
Salou has many activities for both children and grown ups. Port Aventura theme park, owned by Universal, is a fantastic modern theme park built around the basis of five worlds, with rides to match the theme of each world. The park also has 25 live shows a day as well as restaurants and bars. Salou also has two waterparks, Aquaopolis and Aqualeon. While both are filled with the slides and pools you would expect from a waterpark, Aqualeon also has a zoo with a large selection of animals. Many hotels and bars in Salou will provide entertainment throughout the day and night for both adults and children, while the beaches play host to many sporting activities and water sports, the surrounding streets provide play parks and terrace cafes, and at night a selection of clubs and bars light the pavements.
Salou, like many other meditteranean towns, has a rich cultural history. While it doesn’t portray as strong a cultural heritage as neighbouring villages Tarragona and Reus, Salou has its own subtleties, the modern buildings built as tourism expands in the town blend with the classical styled older buildings. The Church of Santa María del Mar was built in 1766, consisting of a church with a walled belfry and single bell, it was mainly used by seafaring folk. It was extended early in the 20 th century to its present form.
Local food in Salou is mainly catalan dishes, many of which are based on fresh fish caught in the local clear waters, but also consists of traditional Spanish dishes such as paella. Plenty of restaurants and hotels in Salou will serve more traditional foods alongside the more British tasting fast-foods such as burgers, pizzas and hot dogs.

We stayed for a week inlcuding Hallowe'en. The apartment was exactly as described, very comfortable, clean and spacious, with everything we'd need (family of 5, 3 children). Perfect walking distance from all amenities, good supermarket nearby. Loved Salou, the beach and the theme park were ideal for a family trip and very clean. Apartment was very well placed, safe and secure. Great communication with owners. Transfers from airport recommended. Considering a return next year if possible ! Response: Thank you for your lovely review, we are so pleased to hear that you had such a good time and it's great to hear that you want to go back. Thank you for your booking for June 2013. |

Our family booked two apartments owned by the same person. They were in the same complex with different entrances but the apartments were next to each other looking out on the swimming pool. They looked identical inside and were very well equiped with everything we needed for our short stay. We were able to take advantage of the indoor facilities at the complex - pool, sauna, steam room and jacussi. The apartments are very secure with a locked gate at the entrance, double locks on the door and shutters which can be closed at night and when leaving the apartment. They are within walking distance to the prominade in Salou and very close to Portaventura. The owner and her representative in Salou were very helpful to us and we had contact telephone numbers for both. We had a very enjoyable time and would recommend the apartments. Response: Thank you for your lovely comments, we are so pleased to hear that you all had such a wonderful holiday and the apartment and complex met your expectations for a relaxing time away. |
