Salir and Sao Martinho are well situated for many places to visit. Sao Martinho comes alive in the summer, with loads of bars and restaurants. The beach has lots of activities for children.....banana boat, pedaloes and bouncy assault course in the middle of the bay. If you want a little peace from all the action, Salir is the other side and more peaceful part of the bay. The whole of the bay is very safe for swimming as there are no waves. For any sufer dudes there are plently of big waves to be found in Foz do Arelho and Peniche.
The nearest town is Caldas da Rainha which is a 20 min drive with a lovely wooded park and plenty of lovely shops on its small streets. Obidos, the 2nd most visited place in Portugal, is 15 mins drive away. This beautiful walled city is a must to visit. You might be lucky and be there for Chocolate Festival, Medieval Festival or Christmas Wonderland. The lagoon with Obidos on one shore and Foz d'Arelho on the other is a great place to swim and do water sports.
The quaint seaside resort of Nazare is 15 mins by car, it has a water park for the kids and a funicular railway up to the old town. Further afield there are Alcobaca and Batalha with their monasteries and Leira with its castle and shopping! The Basilica and Sanctuary at Fatima are world famous The caves at Mira d'Aire ( and other places) and very interesting and very dark!! Peniche, 20 minutes drive away, boasts a larger water park and beautiful beaches, and the Belengas Island if you fancy a boat trip.
Lisbon is also easily reached in just over an hour...if you don't want the drive in Lisbon you can drive and park at start of metro system and get a train in. The city is easy to navigate with the metro system. It has great museums and monasteries. Popular with the kids are the Oceanarium and Science Museum at the Park of Nations.
We have been going to this area as a family, with Amy (now 13) and Max (now 11), for 6 years ans still keep finding new places to visit.
The Central Portugal region
The Silver Coast is Portugal's undiscovered gem! Much less busy and hectic that the Algarve, the area has long been popular with Portuguese and French holidayakers and now a few British people have found out about it! It is relatively unspoilt and uncommercialised but that doesn't mean there is nothing to do.
The weather is cooler than the extremes of the Algarve but still sunny from April to October. You may experience a short shower but generally the weather is perfect!
Salir do Porto
Salir is well situated for many places to visit. The nearest town is Caldas da Rainha 20 min drive with a lovely wooded park. Obidos, the 2nd most visited place in Portugal, is 15 mins drive away. The quaint seaside resort of Nazare is 15 mins by car, it has a water park for the kids!
The beach is a 5 minute walk down the road and also the famous sand dunes ...great for sliding down, not so great for walking up! A new outdoor swimming pool is also within a 5 minute walk.
Further afield there are Alcobaca and Batalha with their monasteries, Fatima, the caves at Mira d'Aire (and another waterpark) and the Belengas Island off Peniche...to name but a few.

"Lovely spacious house - great for families"
Lovely spacious house which easily accommodated our two families. Teenagers loved the games room and we all enjoyed the swimming pool. Great book of ideas and suggestions. Too much to fit into a week! Beach was so close we could go back to collect forgotten items. Safe lagoon for children and adults to play in but not too far from the surf beach for more excitement. Had planned to eat in but close proximity of some great inexpensive restaurants meant we only lit the bbq once. The 48 flavours ice cream shop, where you bought by weight, was an instant hit with us all. Highly recommend as a base to explore the Lisbon coast. We will definitely be returning.

"FAB! Been a few times & have booked again this year"
Lovely spacious house, clean with all mod cons & everything needed for a pleasant stay for a family. We were usually the only people in the shared pool. There is a playroom with many games & toys in. There is a basement with washer/dryer & games room with table tennis & darts. Owners checked in with us to make sure everything was ok. A fab place to stay & a great base to explore the area. Loved it
