About this location
The Tuscany region
The region is located in the central, western part of the country, north of Rome and south of Genoa. It is bounded by the Apennine Mountains to the North and East.
From the Etruscans to the Romans to the Renaissance, Tuscany is possibly the greatest repository of art in the world, from extraordinary paintings and sculpture to frescoes and architectural masterpieces.
Florence is the capital of Tuscany. Other important cities are Siena, Pisa, Arezzo, Pistoia, Prato, Lucca, Livorno, Grosseto, Massa Carrara.
Pisa, located in western Tuscany, is known throughout the world for its famous Leaning Tower, but there is so much more to Pisa than just this striking landmark
Saline di Volterra
This area is historical Tuscany, almost equal distance from Pisa, Siena and Florence. A quiet retreat in the beautiful Tuscan countryside away from the hurly-burly of Chiantishire, this is the real Tuscany. Beautiful towns like San Gimignano just short drives away.
Andrea Bocelli's hometown of Lajatico and his serene Teatro del Silenzio is 15 minutes away. Views of historical Volterra and the ancient Etruscan township of Montecatini Val di Cecina are from every window.
Volterra has Etruscan, Roman and mediaeval remains, including an impressive Roman theatre, plus several museums. The main traditional industry is alabaster, and there are plenty of shops/workshops where you can see alabaster products being made.
Excellent restaurants are to be found not only in Volterra but in all of the local villages. The nearest village is Saline di Volterra which has shops, a wine shop with local red , rose and white wine at 80p a litre !! and some really good restaurants. Apart from some fine local eateries, there is a good range of food shops.
Florence can be reached by train from Pontedera, alternatively drive and stop on the way in Vinci to see Leonardo's birthplace. Siena offers many beautiful works of art, an Etruscan Museum in the Catacombs and the famous horse race, "The Pallio" held in the Piazza del Campo in August. . Volterra is fortfied by Etruscan walls and well worth the drive for the spectacular views as well as shops and restaurants. San Gimignano is famous for its extraordinary towers
Cycling, horse riding, fishing and walking are popular in this part of Tuscany and the golf course at Castelfalfi is now open after being re-designed.
Beach 25 mins away
Cycling is very popular and hire is available
Vineyard visits from local to the Super Tuscans like Sassicia
Segway tours of Pisa
Ski resort and mountains 2 1/2 hours away !!
Rome 2 hours away
Mugello - home of the Italian Moto GP - Valentino 46 !!!!!!!!!!!
Rugby in the winter - Cavalieri Prato are the local team of a good standard - Amlin cup 2011, 2012 and 13

"Beautiful apartment in a stunning part of the world"
We had an absolutely brilliant stay here. The holiday began with being picked up by Jill, there was a little bit of confusion with which apartment we were staying at but it was all in good spirits and took 10 minutes to rectify. The apartment itself is modern with Italian charm. It is stylish and modern with rustic character. It has plenty of bathroom facilities, all beautifully fitted and a lovely balcony/terrace overlooking beautiful countryside.
The pool area is great, all the people we met were very friendly and the views over the countryside whilst swimming were just stunning. There are shared sun beds (although some apartments have their own) and although the pool area never got particularly overcrowded, there weren't enough beds for everyone. We ended up just laying our towels down on the concrete or the grass and it was no problem.
Italy is experiencing a drought at the moment so the water gets switched off every night. As long as you know about this its not really a problem. We made sure to fill up empty water bottles with tap water in case we needed it. We were told not to drink the tap water so drank bottled, and then used our stored water for hot drinks in the evening. The water went off roughly about 6 in the evening until about 8 in the morning, so as long as you know, you can shower around this etc. Obviously once they get rain again this wont be an issue.
The surrounding area is great. For a quiet evening meal there is Saline le Volterra with a lovely restaurant and gelateria. For a more lively atmosphere Volterra is the place to go, there are tonnes of great restaurants, bars and geleterias.
We did various trips to Pisa, Florence, an Acqua park etc. (definitely recommended btw).
Overall, a brilliant holiday, and just the break that we all needed. If in doubt, dont be!

"A magical place - beautiful, historical - and always the quality apartment to return to and enjoy its comforts and views"
This fabulous apartment is in the middle of a magical Tuscan landscape. It is a great location for sight seeing wonderful towns like Lucca and Florence, having a day at the coast. But don't ignore the local hilltop walled towns and their ancient, living buildings. Relax into Tuscan life and enjoy its wine, its food and its history. The apartment is very well apppinted and furnished. Having a local contact is an asset. Starting and ending the day in the pool was great.

"EXCELLENT ON ALL COUNTS"
We found the apartment to be fitted out to a very hight standard. It had the advantage of being fitted with air conditioning. It was a very secure and peaceful location. Close to many towns all with good shops and reasonable priced restaurants. The pool was superb and came with supplied sun beds A twenty minute drive will take you to the nearest beach resort . We will look forward to returning there soon.
