Historic walled towns, roman ruins, thermal spas and baths', lush country side, rolling hills. Festivals celebrating everything from salt to peppers, to cheese and wines. The french love any excuse to party. Weekly markets. The ancient cathedral cities of Pau and Bayonne to sightsee and shop. Try the many waterside sea food restaurants in Bayonne. All this and more and all within a short drive. Do as much as you want or as little as you please.
Visit Spain for the day. Just one hour away. Carry on to San Sebastian or Pampalona, famous for it's bull run.

The Salies de Bearn / Carresse area
Salies de Bearn is a five minute drive away. This beautiful unspoilt area of France has everything to offer. If cooking is your thing visit the many weekly markets. Use my french and basque cook books to conjure a traditional french feast to enjoy alfresco with family and friends. The town of Salies has a host of small shops selling everything from local delicacies such as foie gras, and bayonne ham to cheeses and fresh meats. Try the wines from the local caves. Pamper yourself at the thermes with healing warm salt waters and powerful relaxing jets. Sit and watch the world go by in one of the bars or restaurants.. Do one of the many marked walks, or try a round of golf . Visit the museum of salt. Salt made Salies famous, Hence the fete de sel usually celebrated in the first week of September, a must see spectacle of fun.
Try the scrummy fresh bread and cakes from our boulangerie here in Carresse. Enjoy a drink in Jo's bar where the locals gather. You will be made very welcome and her music collection is great. Children welcome. Or step back in time and visit Jacks bar which hasn't changed for fifty years. There is a good restaurant in the village which serves very traditional food but we recommend the Belle Auberge in the next village it is recommended in the Michelin guide. The food is excellent. Booking is necessary. We would gladly do this for you. Visit Sorde l' Abbaye and see the ruined monastry and roman mosaics just 5 minutes away or visit Peyrehorade with its weekly market 10 minutes away. Try the scenic route to Sauveterre to see the walled town and take in the view of the Pyrenees. Local maps available. Walk down to the river to fish or just to relax.

The house is really lovely and you feel at home as soon as you walk through the door. We were a group of 6 adults and 3 children and we all had plenty of room and privacy if needed. Julia and Steve were great they catered to our requests and were easy to contact if you needed them but left you to enjoy the holiday. A car is essential as you need to venture further afield we tended to have one day out and one day in which worked quite well. The village is small the nearby restaurant does not represent the standard of normal French restaurants. Jo,s bar is friendly but you get by a lot easier with a basic knowledge of French as the locals do not speak English but its good fun and its surprising how your French will improve over a few weeks. To conclude great house-great owners-central location-recommended!! |
