The Provence Alpes Cote d'Azur / Var region
The Var department is situated west of its famous neighbour Côte d’Azur. With its beautiful landscape with both mountains and sea and its sunny Mediterranean weather it is a popular holiday destination all year round.
Along its 300-km long coast, you will find some stylish seaside resorts like glitzy St Tropez and Ste Maxime, as well as some smaller but equally beautiful and charming resorts like Bandol or Le Lavandou.
The beautiful Iles d'Or (Porquerolles, Ile du Levant and Pors Cros) are also well worth a visit and can be reached by boat from La Tour Fondue near Hyères. Inland, you will find delightful and unspoilt hilltop villages and further to the north, the breathtaking Gorges du Verdon with its many water sports and activities.
The Salernes area
Situated near Salernes, in the Haut Var, at an altitude of 400m, 30mn from Draguignan and Brignoles. Nearby Sillans is a medieval village with picturesque waterfalls, ancient walls, a castle and 19th Century chapels.
Salernes is the capital city of ceramics and potteries, and boasts a 13th Century Romanesque church, a medieval castle and numerous fountains. Situated 45 mn from the Mediterranean sea, 25 mn from the Gorges du Verdon and Lake Ste Croix.
PLACES TO VISIT:
Salernes. 3 km. Medieval town built around its castle, in a picturesque setting in the valley of the Bresque river. Best known for its tradition of tile making, especially for the trademark terracotta hexagonal floor tiles of Provence.
Entrecasteaux. 11 km. Pretty and unspoilt village with medieval streets and typical pastel painted houses. The village is overlooked by its chateau.
Aups. 11 km. Pretty Provencal hill top village overlooked by the remains of its medieval castle. Its weekly markets are famous including its winter truffle markets.
Tourtour. 12 km. Also called the village in the sky. A beautiful medieval hilltop village with plenty of narrow streets lined with very picturesque Provencal houses dominating a vast area of Provence, from Fréjus and the Mediterranean sea to the east to Cezanne’s Ste Victoire mountain to the west.
THINGS TO DO:
Ste Croix lake. 30 km. The largest of the Verdon lakes and lovely spot for splashing about. Also boat, pedalo and kayak hire.
Provence Aventure, Vidauban. 30 km. Tree top adventure park. A beautiful setting, in the heart of an oak forest, on the banks of the Argens River. Different trails for the whole family (from the age of 3) according to ages and abilities including for the fearless ones a 200m-long zip line crossing the Argens river. A refreshing experience!
Aoubré - L'Aventure Nature, Flassans-sur-Issole. 40 km. Tree top adventure park. A park for the whole family with trails adapted for all ages and abilities. In total, 7 different trails offering 105 workshops. Also do not miss the visit of the small farm with large enclosures. Allow the whole day to make the most of it.
Le Jardin de César et Léonie, Le Muy. 40 km. Horse riding, Tree top adventure park. For great thrills in all security, up to 12m in height. Different trails for all abilities and ages and a lovely way to discover the forest. Also pony and horse rides available. At Les Folies de Léonie, there is free access to a giant playground under parents’ supervision.
FURTHER AFIELD:
Flayosc. 18 km. Pretty town with typical Provencal streets and great views from the church out across the vineyards.
Lorgues. 19 km. Small and very pleasant medieval town with a maze of old streets, open squares and fountains, surrounded by vineyards and olive trees.
Draguignan. 25 km. Pleasant town once a military centre but now with tourist and cultural attractions. Lovely avenues lined with plane trees surround the old city. Excellent shopping and markets. Several museums.
Gorges du Verdon. 40 km. Europe’s largest river canyon and one of France’s greatest natural wonder with twisting narrow roads, dramatic scenery, awesome views but also lofty little villages and chapels clinging to the rocks. THE place for climbing, rafting, canyoning, kayaking...
