The West Country / Devon region

The South Hams is renowned as the Jewel of the South West. The spectacular coastline, which can be enjoyed along the 60 miles of coastal path or on the award-winning beaches, is a draw in itself. However, the regions attractions do not end at the shore as you’ll find something to suit all ages and interests. The South Hams is truly a captivating area worthy of its national status as a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and will tempt you into returning year after year.

Salcombe area

Dartmouth & Kingswear
The splendour of Dartmouth’s enchanting waterfront and the imposing Britannia Royal Naval College are enough of a draw in themselves; but Dartmouth has plenty more on offer. During the summer the town is a hive of activity with sailing as one of the main attractions. The music festival, food festival and Christmas festivals ensure that there is something to look forward to all year round. There are cafes and bars a plenty to relax in after meandering around the independent shops, galleries and markets.

Kingswear is only a short ferry ride away and is home to a few friendly pubs, a village stores and Post Office, the Darthaven Marina and the Steam train to Paignton.

Salcombe
Probably the most famous resort and sailing centre in the South West, Salcombe is the Southern most town in the South Hams. The views Salcombe boasts are second to none and in the summer months is a haven of activity with sail boats, dinghies and yachts peppering the river. Shops include Musto, Jack Wills, White Stuff, fat face mixed in with independent galleries and boutiques. You are never far from refreshments with plenty of traditional pubs to choose from all within a few steps form the waters edge.

There are 3 beautiful sandy beaches just across the river from Salcombe; East Portlemouth, North Sands and South Sands which can be access via regular ferries.

Slapton sands, Torcross
Situated between Dartmouth and Salcombe, at the end of a 3 mile beach, Torcross combines the charm of an English village with it's thatched cottages and friendly atmosphere, with beach life and wildlife. The village itself has a general stores and post office, two traditional pubs with excellent food, cafes, pottery and a butcher.

Slapton Freshwater Ley, which sits parallel to the beach and is only separated by the road, is a National Nature reserve and is bursting with wildlife and birdlife.

Torcross also bares an important memorial to the lives that were lost during World War II. It was made famous as the training ground for US Army forces preparing for the D-Day invasion in World War II. An American Sherman tank which was lost at sea in 1944 and recovered in 1984, and memorials, stand beside the visitor parking lot as a reminder of the lives that were lost.
