In Salcombe, on a private lane within ¾ mile of the beaches and quay, an impressive, 19th cent. detached house built for the owners' great-grandfather by the fashionable architect, C. Harrison Townsend. It has glorious long views of the estuary and lush coast from all rooms except one. A large, enclosed garden surrounds it with paved parking at the front, and lawn/shrubs on two levels at the back.

Inside, every inch a lovely, comfortable, much appreciated home. The moment you step through the front door, the gorgeous view strikes you; an open hall (loo/washbasin) leads into comfort-designed living room with views down the garden and across the water and French windows opening to sunny terrace (table/chairs); second cosier living room with TV/Sky/DVD and same views. Smart, stylish kitchen/dining room (two dishwashers, microwave, fridge-freezer, double-oven range-style cooker, larder fridge) with double butler sinks, beech worktops, TV/DVD and those views. From back door, 5 steps down to courtyard and outhouses (washing machine, tumble drier, larder fridge, smart wet-room/loo ideal for sandy people, wetsuit/surfboard storage).

From the living room, elegant curving stairs up to five bedrooms – a double (6' bed) with en suite shower-room (suite, bidet) and limited clothes-hanging space; a double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) with little balcony; a double (6' zip-linked bed or twin) with additional child's 5' long bed; one with two singles (limited clothes-hanging space); and a narrow room with two sets of bunk beds (limited clothes-hanging space). Two bathrooms (suites, one plus bath-shower and one plus hand-shower). Ready meals available. Damages Deposit £200. A stunningly beautiful spot.

The West Country region

The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.

Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.

Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.

Salcombe

Salcombe: one of the most beautifully sited small towns in Britain, at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary, a yacht haven with creeks, sandy bays. Waterside pubs, nice shops. Boats to hire, fishing, superb Nat. Trust cliff walks/gardens; museum, tennis, outdoor swimming pool (in summer); pedestrian ferry to East Portlemouth (lovely beaches, The Venus Café and Takeaway). Thurlestone and Bigbury (golf), 6 and 8 miles.
