Cottage | 8 bedrooms | sleeps 17
A huge, handsome, detached house, set high looking over South Sands. It has the most sensational views along the estuary and stands in 1½ acres of steep, mature wooded garden (small pond). Numerous shallow steps lead down through the garden to a private footpath and the beach (100 steep yards away). Around the house and in the gardens there are several flat sunbathing areas and a lovely mixture of neat flowering shrubs and wildness.
A private lane leads to the house and parking area/garage and from there, 17 steps down to front door. Elegant hall with stairs down to very large and beautiful open-plan fitted kitchen/dining room (dishwasher, microwave, large fridge-freezer plus drinks fridge, oil-fired Aga plus electric oven and induction hob) with granite worktops, Belfast sink, dining table comfortably seating 12 and doors to large, enclosed deck (table/chairs, sun loungers, cushions) with fabulous views; double doors to living room which is split-level (3 steps) with TV/Sky/DVD, open fire, comfy seating for 12 and estuary views. At the back of the house, a twin bedroom, a showering/wetsuit drying room with huge shower, Sheila Maid and Belfast sink, loo (washbasin) and a utility room with washing machine, tumble drier and Sheila Maid.
Stairs up to five more bedrooms, all with stunning sea views – the master double with 6' four-poster bed, 2 steps down to en suite bathroom (suite with separate shower) and balcony; a double (5' bed) with en suite bathroom (suite with separate shower); a double (5' bed) with en suite shower-room (suite); a twin; and a little room with child's folding bed or cot (limited clothes-hanging space). Bathroom (suite plus hand-shower). More stairs up to a vast and brilliant children's room with four single beds, table football, folding beds (by arrangement) and en suite shower-room (suite).
There is also a modest but comfortable, detached little garden house with small kitchen/living area (VDU/video), bedroom with double cabin bed (5'), shower-room (suite) and limited clothes-hanging/storage space.
Table tennis and sunbathing on the lower deck and an outdoor shower – very handy for sandy bodies up from the beach.
Professional catering and ready meals available. Damages Deposit £500. A fabulous family house, but, as with any home, small children should be supervised. Best for maximum of 12 adults and assorted children.

The West Country region
The South Hams: southernmost Devon; between the river Dart and river Tamar and south of Dartmoor, lush farmland and wooded river valleys turning to beautiful estuaries, its coast very beautiful and remarkably well preserved – sandy beaches and mighty cliffs between those estuaries, amazingly little sprawling modern ugliness. Inland too, away from main roads, it remains surprisingly peaceful.
Among special coastal places are Dartmouth; sheltered Blackpool Sands; Slapton's long curve of pebble beach and nature reserve lagoon; the cliffs about Start Point and Prawle Point, Bolt Head and Bolt Tail; East Portlemouth's beach and Salcombe's location and views; Thurlestone proving that family seaside places don't need to be brash; Bigbury's huge sands and the fun of getting to Burgh Island; waterside, oak-wood-sheltered Noss Mayo/Newton Ferrers; many others, less easy of access, are for you to discover.
Kingsbridge and Totnes, both old, attractive and small, are the towns at the area's heart; Plymouth – the West Country's biggest town, with Naval base, ferry port, theatre, cinemas, history, Hoe (great views) and Barbican (where the life is) – is on the area's edge. Dartington Hall is an arts centre (films, plays, music, dance) with lovely gardens. Pleasure cruisers ply the Kingsbridge estuary and Dart and Tamar rivers.
Salcombe: one of the most beautifully sited small towns in Britain, at the mouth of the Kingsbridge estuary, a yacht haven with creeks, sandy bays. Waterside pubs, nice shops. Boats to hire, fishing, superb Nat. Trust cliff walks/gardens; museum, tennis, outdoor swimming pool (in summer); pedestrian ferry to East Portlemouth (lovely beaches, The Venus Café and Takeaway). Thurlestone and Bigbury (golf), 6 and 8 miles.
