The North Spanish Coast / Asturias Province region

With its abundance of mountains, rivers, beaches and beautiful nature reserves, Asturias is recognised as one of the most beautiful parts of Spain.
It has an overall population of about 1.2 million inhabitants, of which more than half live in the 3 major cities of Oviedo, Gijon and Aviles. The countryside is therefore scattered with rural villages still keeping up the traditions and customs of thousands of years of culture.
Pre-romanic churches, prehistoric paintings 10,000 yrs old and a gastronomy which combines the products of the sea, the field and the montains gives Asturias its deserved title as a natural paradise.
The Salas / Malleza area
La Estrada is situated at 450 mts above sea level over looking the Aranguin valley, with magnificent views of the Codillero de Cantabrica, which forms part of the Picos de Europa.
The nearby farming town of Salas provides all the amenities of everyday needs, with supermarkets, chemists, cafes, restaurants and bars and a weekly street market selling many locally produced products including vegetables, fruit, bread, cheese and sausage.
There is also a 9 hole golf course in Salas, but for those preferring larger courses Oviedo and Gijon have several as well.
Malleza, which can be seen from La Estrada, is known locally as the mini Habana with it's collection of Indiano style houses built by the returning emmigrants from South America. it is also home to the restaurant 'El Son del Indiano' know locally for it's excellent cuisine.
For those of you with young children a visit to 'Bird Corner' in Santianes is a must with over 100 types of different birds to see.
Also just outside Pravia in Agones the 'Garden of Aromas' provides a delightful insight into herbs and flowers which the owner grows in his garden.
For those of you wishing a more energetic holiday there are a couple of local companies that offer surfing ,canoeing and horse riding in the area as well.

We loved the location, away from the hustle and bustle of the town. The owners were nearby to offer local knowledge which was really helpful. The cottage was well equipped and had everything we needed. It was clean and warm and suited us perfectly. It provided an excellent base to explore the surrounding area, the coast was our favourite, with amazing surfing. The owners helped us to book lessons before our holiday and having this contact was really helpful to us. |
