About the home
Www.HolidayLakeComo.com
Like dazzling jewels, the towns of Como, Tremezzo, Menaggio, and Bellagio sparkle along the shores of Lake Como, where also glitters a hidden gem, Sala Comacina.
Here in this lakeside-idyll steeped in ancient Roman history stands Casa Matra Ponto, the ideal getaway offering space and comfort for six or romantic hideaway for two.
Casa Matra Ponto's beautifully realised rustic charm, created by combining two houses each over 300 years old, extends over three levels and is accentuated in the homely kitchen. In the upstairs bedrooms antique furnishings and quality bedding provide a restful ambiance where an additional sitting room and balcony adjoining the master bedroom offer privacy for romance.
Sheltered by the only island in Lake Como 'Isola Comacina', Sala as the village is known locally - the 'salon' of the lake, enjoys a unique sun-drenched micro-climate. Here you are invited to enjoy village life with every convenience close at hand: freshly baked bread daily, artisan butcher, groceries, café/bar, local tavern, fine dining choices, water taxi and boat connections, local bus service, bank/Bankomat, newsagent, post office, and village church; all within 200 metres.
Chat with the neighbours; enjoy an 'aperitivo'; relax with a coffee in the square; swim at the beach; take a boat to explore the island or cross to Bellagio; visit Como or Menaggio, hike to Switzerland, or simply plan another lazy day enjoying what Sala and Matra Ponto have to offer.

The Lombardy / Lake Como Area region

In a subliminal setting graced with natural beauty, the Lake Como remains a place to draw breath and wonder. Ever since the end of the 19th century when Lake Como flourished as a tourist destination offering a sun-drenched lakeside location with international hotels and characterful old villages often wedged onto
narrow beaches between rugged cliffs and water, Lake Como evokes images of flowering balconies, Baroque gardens and splendid waterside villas. Nearby can be found some of Italy's finest art cities, such as Milan, Verona & Bergamo.
Today tourists flock to view the many famous villas which give Lake Como its unique international appeal - Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo, Villa Balbianello in Lenno (the backdrop of famous movies such as Star Wars and the 007 Bond film Casino Royale), and Villa Melzi in Bellagio with sub-tropical gardens, which provide a haven of peace and tranquillity. Likewise the charm of lakeside villages apparently forgotten by time, and chic hotels such as Villa Serbilloni, Villa d'Este, Grand Hotel Cadenabbia, Grand Hotel Tremezzo and smaller boutique hotels such as Flori and Belvedere.
Here too churches and works of art spanning the centuries since AD1000 create a viewing paradise where nature and man-made compete for attention along with modern preoccupation for shopping in towns such as Bellagio, Menaggio, Como, and Milan itself only 45 minutes by train away.
The Sala Comacina area
Sala Comacina enjoys a unique micro-climate sheltered by the island, where guests are invited to enjoy village life with every convenience close at hand: freshly baked bread daily, artisan butcher, groceries, cafe/bar, local tavern, fine dining choices, water taxi and boat connections, local bus service, bank/Bankomat, newsagent, post office, and village church; all within 200 metres of the house.
The Greenway Walk links Sala Comacina with lake-side villages to the north to Menaggio, rising and falling as it takes the turns of the lake. From Sala join the walk from above the Post Office near the Council chambers or along the waterfront towards Villa Rachele along Via del Pinio. Elegant ribbons of water stretch out folded into the foothills with a spectacular back drop of the snow-capped Alps as the walk winds through shaded dells and open vistas. Behind Ossuccio a spectacular path winds up through the UNESCO site of Sacro Monte di Ossuccio where stations of the cross lead to the church of the Madonna (and a cafe).
The municipality of Sala Comacina is in the Province of Como, in the northern Italian region of Lombardy. Sala has a population of around 700 inhabitants and lies approximately 20km north east of Como on the sunny western side of the lake.
In the last century, the small medieval village of Sala Comacina was a already a popular holiday destination, as is evident from the large number of superb Villas dotted along the lake side. The 'Villa Rachele' situated on the headland 'Puncia' was once owned by Cesare Beccaria, where he was reputed to have entertained many famous writers. Villa Bonfiglio lies south of the village adjacent to Taverna Bleu.
A local water taxi service across to the only Island on Lake Como, named 'Isola Comacina' offers a chance to explore the island's medieval history or to dine in the island's famous restaurant 'Locanda dell'Isola Comacina' . Visited by many celebrities, the same menu has been served since 1945, which certainly seems to make a good recommendation!
The Cadenabbia & Menaggio Golf Club celebrating 100 years this year and is Italy's oldest golf course. Established in 1907 with 18 holes Par 70, it is located above Menaggio near Croce, in Grandola ed Uniti, approx. 20 min. by car. Tel: +39 344 321 03.
In winter the closest major international ski resort is St. Moritz. Madesimo toward the Splugen Pass can be reached by car in around 1 hr 20 min.

Arriving in Style
For first timers to Casa Matra Ponto we recommend taking a taxi from Como San Giovanni Station (or Como a Lago) depending on your train from Milan or Bergamo.
LINATE
if you fly into Linate take a local airport taxi directly to Milan Centrale Station (about €20), (or Pullman coach, about €6 per person), (or to your hotel in Milan if stopping over).
MALPENSA
If you fly into Maplensa use the airport Pullman bus service to Milan Centrale (about €6 pp, taxi about €100).
BERGAMO
Take the train from Bergamo Orio Al Serio to Como S. Giovanni Station (approx 1.5 - 2.5 hrs - with a change at Milano Centrale or a regional station such as Monza or Seregno).
TAXI FROM COMO TO SALA COMACINA
To be greeted upon your arrival in Como we always recommend booking a taxi with Lake Como Taxis in advance. Naturally, Gianluigi (Gigi) is also pleased to arrange airport pickup and transfer for you and your group.
To reach Sala Comacina by taxi from Como Gigi will gladly drive you along the lakeshore road (buses generally travel via the high road) if time permits. May we suggest that you request a running commentary en route (in English) pointing out the villas as you pass each along the lake: the ex-Versace Villa, Villa L’Oleandra (where George lives), Sting’s Villa, Villa Balbiano, and many others – well worth the experience if you’re on your first visit to Lake Como. The taxi journey costs about €60.
When booking a taxi please inform Gigi about your party and luggage to ensure he brings the appropriate vehicle for your group (a Mercedes mini-bus or estate-wagon for example). Gigi's e-mail responses in English are quick and efficient.

Please also advise your ETA in Milan, which you can update by mobile (handy-phone) once you actually arrive at Milan Centrale Station and again once your train departs for Como to finalise your meet and greet infront of the station. The train journey from Milan to Como takes approximately 35 minutes.
Both stations in Como have taxi ranks, but the chance of getting an English-speaking driver is rather slim, hence the suggestion to pre-book.
