The Turquoise Coast/Lycia region
Features of Tlos include:
Acropolis Hill - overlooks a lovely valley of fertile fields and orchards with mountains rising in the distance. Lots of Lycian rock-cut tombs and sarcophagi. Crowning the top is the fortress of Kanlı Ağı ('Bloody Chief Ali'), a notorious Ottoman feudal lord, built upon the foundations of a Lycian fortress. It was still in use in the 19th century - the explorer Spratt was entertained here in 1842 by the brother of the ağa occupying it at that time.
Also upon this hill are a Lycian wall and a Roman era wall. Since early Lycian times, the city's settlement was probably concenrated on the southern and western slopes, for wide terraces with huge cisterns and the back walls of buildings carved from the rock are found there.
The view from the top is spectacular with amazing 360 degree views over the Xanthos valley and the surrounding mountains. Although the hill looks high, there is a good path and it is actually not difficult to get to the top.
The Bay Area: The Fethiye area consists of 12 districts and 71 villages. The population (nufus) of the area is 157,000 (as at the census of 2000) in total. The main town population was 52,000 and the villages 59,000. The recent surge in development will see this increase further over the foreseeable future.
Why not have a look at our gallery (pick from the menue above) for great pictures of the people, places and faces that make up this unique place.
Fethiye: Fethiye is located on the South Western tip of Turkey on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. When viewed from the sea it is back dropped by the Taurus mountain range and in particular Mendos and Babadag mountains. In the winter these mountains are often snow capped which adds to the beauty. The bay is a natural safe harbour for ships and the marina in Fethiye is a popular stopping off point for leisure craft. The position of Fethiye and the bay means it is protected from the winter storms that sweep in from the south.
Within the bay is Sovalye Island which can be reached only by boat.
Oludeniz: The name Oludeniz means dead sea, and refers to its world famous blue lagoon. The lagoon is a great place to swim and cool down in the heat of summer. The main beach that visitors see, however, is Belcekiz. This beach provides a range of waters sports and air activities as well as being a great place to soak up the sunshine. The population was 6,255 in 2000.
Ovacik Village: Is 4 km up the mountain from Fethiye and its altitude means it's often cooler than Fethiye that is at sea level. It has seen a great deal of development over the past few years by the Turkish landowners, and consequently there are many Bristish owned villa's here.
Hisaronu Village: Is situated between Ovacik and Oludeniz and is a popular destination for package tourists from Europe. Its lively bars and restaurants provides Turkish and international cooking for those who don't want to stray too far from their culinary roots.
Kaya Koy: The village sky line is dominated by the deserted Greek village that was abandoned in 1922 when Turkey and Greece swapped populations from their respective countries. The rest of village is typically Turkish and is a great place to walk around and take in the village life. The population in 2000 was 1,539.
Calis: Calis is 5 kilometres north of Fethiye and provides extensive residential and holiday accommodation. Its beach is partly sandy and partly pebbly and stretches down the coast past Kargi and onto Yaniklar. The promenade hosts many restaurants and bars. There are a number of wetlands in Calis that attract migrating and indigenous birds. Parts of the beach are used by Carretta Carretta sea turtles at certain times of the year.
Uzumlu: The name means 'with grapes' in English and refers to its main cash crop. The village centre has numerous small craft shops selling woven items and locally made wine. The local wine house is a pleasant place to try out the local vintage. The village is the starting point for tours to the ancient town of Cadianda high above the village. The population in 2000 was 1,765.
Gocek: At the northern end of Fethiye bay is the harbour of Gocek. The village has grown around the extensive yacht marinas that berth pleasure craft of all sizes and types. Gocek is a great place to visit and watch the rich at play. The population in 2000 was 4,292.
