Home description

The magnificent listed Chateau des Crassanes was built in the late 14th Century, on the site of an 11th Century fortress. The atmosphere of the Chateau des Crassanes, the restored old buildings, and the grounds are quite special.

The Chateau des Crassanes is entirely restored and sumptuously furnished; it even has its own heated private pool. All of the buildings that make up the estate (the chateau, the keep, the cottage and the pavilion) can be let together for a large group up to 30 people. You will undoubtedly be seduced by the elegant décor that makes the Chateau des Crassanes ideal for both personal and professional occasions.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

- At 2km: There are cruises on the Charente river, nautical sports, river fishing, the stone quarry.

- At 6km: There is horse riding, tennis, bicycle rental, boat rental, wildlife reserve.

- Three 18-hole golf courses are within 15km, 35km and 40km respectively.

- La Rochelle Golf Course: Golf de la Prée. A typical Scottish links course with numerous bunkers, 8km from La Rochelle. It overlooks the Ile de Ré and five of the holes follow the coastline. Built on dried up swamp land, it is a flat course swept by sea breezes and offers several water hazards. This pretty course will be enjoyed by all golfers.

- Royan Golf Course: St Palais sur Mer. In the heart of the Forêt de la Coubre, this superb undulating course, slightly inland from the coast, stretches out amongst the pines and natural dunes. After playing the 14th tee there are great views of the sea looking over the trees, and at the end of the course there's a newly extended clubhouse where one can relax in the bar.

- Saintonge Golf Club: Fontcouverte. 18 hole course 2km north east of Saintes.

- Trousse Chemise Golf Course: 9 hole course on the Île de Ré -

- Oleron Golf Club: 9 hole course on the Isle d'Orleron.

- Golf du Cognac: Saint-Brice. An 18-hole golf course bordered by vineyards.


Saintes area

Cities - Rochefort - 35km: Artistic and historical city of the 17th century with a royal and marine background; also known for its spas.
- Saintes - 12km: Ancient roman city, 2000 years old.
- Royan - 40km: An attractive sea side resort on the Atlantic "Coast of Beauty" with one of the biggest zoos in Europe, the "Palmyre", nearby.
- La Rochelle - 60 km: This well known historical city has an old classified harbour and its streets full of historical memories; it is also the capital of the area.
- Cognac - 35km: An historical city with prestigious cellars and distilleries.
- Saint Emilion - 80km: Exquisite medieval city which marks the beginning of Bordeaux's vineyards.

Coast - The Atlantic beaches of the "Coast of Beauty" and the small surrounding islands are only 45km away (28 miles). These beaches are amongst the nicest in France for their length, thin sand, dunes, and the pine-tree forests which border them. You could try fishing in the sea or collecting some of the ornate sea shells.
- Visit the oyster-beds and taste the famous oysters of the area; among others, the "Marennes-Oleron" has a particular reputation.
- There is easy access to the different islands in the area: Oleron, Ré, Aix, Madame, and the famous Fort Boyard.

Countryside - There are numerous charming, small villages, such as the fortified city of Brouage, and the floral village of Talmont.
- There are numerous historical castles (La Gataudière, Panloy, La Roche Courbon), abbeys, fortresses, museums and Romanesque churches. Just ramble through the beautiful countryside to find them.
- "Tumulus de Bougon's" site (1h30 by car): One of the most ancient pre-historical sites in Europe.
- The Poitevin swamp (1h by car): Big natural park which can be discovered in punts.
- The "Futuroscope" (1h30 by car): The big European image attraction park.
- The "Puy du Fou" (2h by car): Hosts a beautiful historical pageant well-known throughout Europe.

The Chateau des Crassanes is rented in its entirety to groups of up to 30. Breakdown of buildings as follows:
- Chateau: Sleeps 10 max plus 1 complimentary baby cot.
- Keep: Sleeps 6 max.
- Cottage: Sleeps 8 max.
- Pavilion: Sleeps 6 max.
- Pilgrim’s room: a large central dining room for 30 people with a huge terrace & garden furniture enabling everyone to eat outside.

The Château has been beautifully restored, with great care taken to preserve its authentic atmosphere. It has two large sitting rooms with stone fireplaces and a library. Five bedrooms all have en suite bathrooms and private loos. On the lower ground floor is a separate WC.
- Bedroom 1: double bed (180x190), bathroom and WC.
- Bedroom 2: family room (two bedrooms) - one double (180x190) and two oversized twins (120x190), a bathroom, and a WC.
- Bedroom 3: suite with a king-size bed (180x200), private living room, bathroom, library and WC.
- Bedroom 4: double bed (160x190), shower and WC.
- Bedroom 5: twin beds (90x190), shower and WC.
- Central heating, washing-machine, tumble-dryer, table tennis.

The keep, the original 11th century fortified tower, has been restored to a high standard of comfort, and enjoys a sunny terrace at the top of the tower, with views far over the surrounding forest and countryside. It has three bedrooms, all with en suite bathrooms and private toilets, and there's also a large sitting room with an open fireplace, a dining room, kitchen, and WC.

The cottage is a delightful building built in local style and situated in the Château park. This very spacious and beautifully decorated house has a large private garden. On the ground floor is a large living/dining room, a kitchen, a double bedroom, and a bathroom with loos. On the first floor there is a master double bedroom, a twin with en suite shower room, a bunk bedroom, a bathroom, and separate loos.

- Bedroom 3: bunk bed (90x190) on the first floor.

The pavilion is on the first floor in a dependance of the chateau located in the garden. It has 3 bedrooms, a bathroom, a large dining room with an American kitchen and a WC.

- Bedroom 3: double bed (140x190) on the first floor.
- Electric heating, washing machine, TV.

Private heated swimming pool (15mx6m, with depth of 1.4m to 1.7m) with WC and changing facilities. Garden furniture, sun loungers, eight hectares of park, and private parking.

- Security deposit: €3500. This is paid by bank transfer 2 weeks before arrival and will be refunded in full after departure subject to damage inspection.
- Linen & towels: All linen and towels are included in the rental price. Pool towels are not included.
- Energy costs: Electricity is charged at 0.05 euros per kwh. Central heating is charged at 100 euros per day for the chateau & the cottage if needed.
- End of stay cleaning: Included.
- Arrival time: 4pm onwards.
- Departure time: 10am. If you leave later than 10am €1000 will be deducted from the security deposit.
- Pets: No pets allowed.
- Smoking: No smoking in the property.
- It is recommended that all guests take out insurance to cover against potential cancellation and any accidental damage caused during your stay at the property.
- Please note that the chateau is a historical monument open to the public for tours during the afternoon. Tours are in the garden and on the ground floor of the chateau in the historical rooms only (2 sitting rooms, a gallery and the library). People are never alone but always with a guide. We offer a guided tour for our guests.
- Vehicles are not authorized to park in the castle car-park at any time. There is a private car-park located behind the property for your vehicles.
- We would like to draw your attention to the possible dangers of the moat around the park, and the terrace on the top of the keep.
