The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
Charente Maritime is the second sunniest region of France and therefore offers relatively mild springs and autumns, as well as warm summer months. It is famous for its seafood and oysters in particular, as well as its famous aperitif, Pineau Charente.
The area is generally flat which makes it popular for cycling with many bike hire shops and plenty of good routes.
There are many long and wide sandy beaches in the area, which are popular with families.
There are a number of historic and beautiful towns and villages dotted around the region.
There is a wide range of activities, which makes it ideal for large groups. There is something for everyone!
Saintes area
Saintes, the nearest major town is beautiful, steeped in art and history and was the capital of the Roman province of Aquitaine in the first century. There are museums, the Abbaye aux Dames, superb churches, a roman amphitheatre, the arch of Germanicus amongst many other architectural treasures. Great market everyday except for mondays.
Cognac with its elegant architecture and its famous distilleries is 15 mins drive from the house. A distillery tour is highly recommended.
La Rochelle with its lovely harbour, shops and restaurants less than 1 hour away. Il de Re, the Cote d'azur of the west is across the famous bridge from La Rochelle.
Ile d'Oleron, is the second largest French island after Corsica and has some excellent beaches and cycle tracks.
Bordeaux - A visit to this glorious city is highly recommended. There have been massive recent renovations and the excellent tram service means you can park your car on the outskirts and ride into the centre for very little money. The old city is very rich in architecture, the wealth testimony to a successful trading history.
Other attractions and activities: 3 public golf courses nearby in Saintes, Cognac and Royan. A tennis court is within walking distance. Horse riding nearby. Cycling very popular. "Easy" trout fishing where you can have your catch cooked and served to you in the next village.
La Palmyre zoo within 40 mins.
The Paleosite, an archaeological excavated site dating back to the Neandertals 35,000 years ago, with interactive animations and many spectacles, is situated within 5 mins of the house.
Many music and dance festivals during summer around the area.
