Home description

Set within a beautiful Charentaise style property (former Napoleonic Captain's residence, per prior owner). Comprising 11x5m enclosed swimming pool, fenced gardens and adjacent meadow (2.4 acres in total), owners accommodation and two two bedroom gites. The property is located in the tranquil hamlet of Lossandière, a few hundred yards to the north of the pretty village of Saint Léger, south of Saintes. Golden beaches lie 24 miles (by road) to the west. Royan is the main coastal resort town that is close. The area is noted for it's micro climate which provides more sun than anywhere else on the west coast of France and is only surpassed by the Mediterranean. There is a good restaurant within walking distance and we are surrounded by glorious open countryside. There is a magnificent forest within a few hundred yards and the walking/cycling is superb with lots of open tracks. The building is very spacious at just under 50m long and each gite is at opposite ends. So you need only get to know other guests if you want to! The ancient towns of Saintes, Cognac and Pons are easily accessible from the house.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region

The area is noted for it's micro climate which provides the highest number of hours of sunshine on the West Coast and is only surpassed by the Mediterranean. Saintes is a beautiful town steeped in art and history, was the capital of the Roman province of Aquitaine in the first century. There are museums, the Abbaye aux Dames, superb churches, a roman amphitheatre, the arch of Germanicus amongst many other architectural treasures. The town is lively with places open late at night. Not far from the town are the châteaux de Panloy, de Crazannes and de la Roche-Courbon. There are boat cruises on the Charente.

Saintes area

Pons, Charente-Maritime a pretty medieval town, complete with castle keep and pilgrims‘ hospital. At the Chateau d'usson now called Chateau des Enigmes there is a puzzle to solve. There is the Centre de Loisirs down on the river where there is a children's play area and you can hire boats. The tube climbing frame proved very popular with one of our younger guests and there are pony rides for about 2€/10mins (end July 2005). There are interesting walks around the town through ancient alleyways and I have been recommended to explore the gardens around the Town hall.

Ports: St Malo - 255 miles(411km) 8.8€, Caen (Ouistreham) - 320 miles(515km) 24.1€, Le Havre - 339 miles(546km) 29.6€, Cherbourg - 341 miles(550km) 8.8€, Boulogne - 462miles(743km) 52.7€, Calais - 482 miles(777km) 55.4€.
TGV to Angoulême(74km) and then ordinary train to Saintes (17km). The property is situated between Pons and Saintes and is easily accessible from the main road RN137. The nearest motorway exit is the A10 to Pons.

Self-catering apartment for a maximum capacity of 5. The apartment was created in 2004 and all the guests that have used it have been very happy with it (‘the best gîte we have ever stayed in’ was one of the comments). Local Professionals were employed to ensure safe electrics (30mA cut off) and reliable installations paying attention to detail such as good thermal and sound insulation.

Baby facilities - cot, highchair, steriliser, changing mat, toys , hand blender.

Area: 70m². All on ground floor. Private walled area just outside front of your gîte (gravel). There is electric heating and double-glazing throughout. Own separate entrance leading into:

Living room/kitchen, 25m², with gas hob, electric oven, fridge/freezer, microwave, dishwasher, washing machine, sink, crockery for 12, sofa, 2 armchairs, table and chairs, cd/radio, television, satellite, dvd and two windows.

Bedroom 1, 14m², with double bed, side tables, wardrobe, armchair, chest of drawers and one window.

Bedroom 2, 10m², with 1 single bed, bunk-bed, side tables, wardrobe in corridor, and one window.

Bathroom with 2 basins, luxurious shower(>1m²), bath and window.

Separate WC with basin and window.

A highchair and cot can be made available.

Long winter lets from £100/week. Rental rates in high season (July/Aug) are based on weekly stay for a family of four. There is a discount of 10 pounds for the second consecutive week. In high season electricity is included. In winter the first 70kwh/week of electricity is free.
