The Poitou-Charentes region
Sitting off the western coast of France opposite the popular and picturesque port of La Rochelle, the Ile de Ré is part of the Charente-Maritime department.
The island is a long sliver (30 km) of golden sands, rustling pine forests, neat vineyards and glittering salt flats. It has been joined to the mainland by a sweeping bridge since 1988. In spite of the changes this has brought, and the inevitable influx of tourists, the island retains much of its quiet charm and refreshing authenticity.
There are ten villages to explore: Rivedoux and Sainte-Marie/La Noue in the south, La Flotte, St Martin, Bois-Plage and La Couarde in the centre, and Ars, Loix, St. Clément and Les Portes further to the north. The best way to see the island is by bike - there are at least a couple of hire stores in each village - and set off with no particular plan in mind. The villages are not more than a few kilometres apart, so you if you start flagging, just look for the nearest bistro, bag your table in the shade and enjoy a glass of something cool!
In a nutshell, pottering is what the island is all about. Doing nothing in particular is the highlight of a holiday on the Ile de Re: sit on the beach and watch the waves, wander round the pretty alleyways of the whitewashed villages and just revel in the freedom of having nothing on the agenda!
Sainte Marie de Re
La Noue/Sainte-Marie are on the west coast of the island, on an attractive stretch of beach that runs all the way up to Bois-Plage, La Couarde and beyond.
The pretty village square is bordered by the typical Ile de Ré style houses and a selection of friendly, family-oriented restaurants (Les Tilleuls is especially recommended!).
A good base for exploring the island by bike.

"Wonderful house, superb location, everything you need is on the door step"
A lovely house and very well equipped. The house is bright and airy creating space and light. We utilised the 3 double bedrooms and everyone was very happy with their room. Each room features lovely paintings by the owner and pretty accessories. The house provides good outdoor living to. Sitting outside in either gardens is a pleasant experience. There was a little building work opposite but this is because the end of September is deemed out of season.
La Noue offers a bakers, newsagents, restaurant, small daily market and the super market isn't far. Everything you need is on the door step (very short walk). The bus stop is a short walk and the buses offer varying stops around the Island or a trip to La Rochelle.
The beach isn't far and is clean and very pretty. A good place to read and enjoy the sea or for children to play.
Daniele was exceptionally helpful throughout our stay. Informative and supportive if you ever needed anything. Very reassuring and much appreciated.
