The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The Aquitaine has a wonderful climate. Summer temperatures average mid twenties to thirties. Warm days generally begin from mid April. There is plenty to do and see in the area, or just recline on a sun lounger by the pool and read a book. There is something for everyone; visit the coastal town of Arcachon with its historic buildings and superb seafood restaurants. For young children there is Lacanau Lac, a small in-shore lake perfect for paddling, pedaloes and biking. Closer to home there is Lac de Gurson with its sandy beach.

The ancient fortified town of Duras looks down from a high proximity above the river Dropt. Chateau de Duras is largely restored and open to visitors throughout the year.

The region is renowned for its abundance of fine wines which are known throughout the world, especially the warm full bodied red wines of the Bordeaux region. There are many local domains, chateaux and co-operatives offering wine tasting. St-Emilion is a 40 minute drive away and a memorable day out, one not to be missed.

Visit pre-historic caves or one of the numerous châteaus.

Hire a canoe from one of the local companies, take a picnic and paddle downstrrem on the Dordogne, stoppping at one of the sandy islands for lunch.

Sainte Foy-la-Grande

There are a number of points along the river where one can hire canoes or kayaks - just head down to the riverside and look out for signposts! Drift back, stopping for a picnic lunch, a swim and view the stunning scenery.

The historic bastide town of Ste Foy la Grande is a 10 minute drive away. The town holds one of the most highly regarded street markets in France every Saturday morning and, in addition, has all amenities such as large supermarkets, banks, restaurants, cafes, hospital, pharmacists and cinema.

15 minutes drive is the pretty bastide town of Duras, perched high up above the Dropt river valley. It has a lively and colourful market every Monday morning and there are several bars and restaurants, as well as the Chateau of the Ducs de Duras, now a museum and open to the public to explore. The chateau hosts concerts and events, including a wine fair in the summer featuring the local appellation, the Cotes de Duras.

A 20 minute drive takes you to the pretty bastide town of Monsegur, with its covered market place which is surrounded on all sides by bars and restaurants and home to the world famous International Swing Jazz Festival which takes place at the beginning of July each year.
