Ste. Foy , is a great example of a Bastide or Fortified town and boasts an array of excellent restaurants catering for all tastes and pockets. It also hosts a superb bustling and colourful Saturday morning market as well as all the usual amenities; supermarkets, banks and so on.
The ancient bastide town of St Emillion lies to the east some 40 mins away. It is here that the English Kings harvested their wine when they once ruled the region of Aquitaine. A wonderful place to visit and easily accessible.

The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Gironde region

The region of Aquitaine once belonged to the English Crown. It was fought over for 100 years during the middle ages when the French finally threw out the English. Under the rule of England, Aquitaine prospered because the English Kings only wanted the wine and let the french local population get on with their own lives in providing for and tending to the vineyards.
The weather in the Gironde/Dordogne departments is mainly warm and dry from April to Mid October. In June & July temperatures can and will exceed 38C. August & September are cooler between 25C and 35C.
One strange fact is that the hottest period of the day is around 5.00pm in the afternoon.
Bergerac town is 35 minutes away [Bergerac famous for its beautiful Rose wine and sweet Monbazillac desert wine] and Bordeaux just over 1 hour famous for its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc wines. St Emilion, a beautiful medieval town with gothic architecture, is a 40 min drive west and there are numerous chateaux [vineyards] offering wine tasting in the immediate area.
There are many of places of interest along the Dordogne river (in both directions) and beautiful towns and villages to explore. Canoe trips can be experienced along the river from many places.
Golf can be played at Golf des Vigiers which is a 25 min drive away in a beautiful chateaux setting .
The Atlantic coast is a 2 hour drive away with the largest sand dune in Europe. Unspoilt, windswept, white sandy Atlantic beaches prevail. The Period seaside town of Arcachon overlooks oyster beds and has superb fish restaurants and is a popular holiday destination of the French.
The Sainte Foy-la-Grande / St Avit De Soulege area
We are situated in St Avit de Soulege, and the lovely town of St Foy la Grande with all shopping facilities is only 7 kilometres away, it’s Saturday markets are the biggest in the area. Bergerac also has a market on Saturday. Canoe trips down the Dordogne can be booked from Pesssac-sur-dordogne 10 mins away.
Duras (19 kilometres) has an interesting castle, restaurants, a Monday market, extensive sports facilities and produces very good wine. There is a leisure lake at Castelgaillard near Duras with swimming, kayaking, fishing, pedaloes, huge water slides, archery, horse riding and crazy golf. Bordeaux is 1 hour 15 mins by car and the coast at Archachon with the largest sand dune in Europe at 2 hours by car.
