The Aquitaine/Dordogne region

The region of Aquitaine once belonged to the English Crown. It was fought over for 100 years during the middle ages when the French finally threw out the English. Under the rule of England, Aquitaine prospered because the English Kings only wanted the wine and let the french local population get on with their own lives in providing for and tending to the vineyards.

The weather in the Gironde/Dordogne departments is mainly warm and dry from April to Mid October. In June & July temperatures can and will exceed 38C. August & September are cooler between 25C and 35C.

One strange fact is that the hottest period of the day is around 5.00pm in the afternoon.

Bergerac town is 35 minutes away [Bergerac famous for its beautiful Rose wine and sweet Monbazillac desert wine] and Bordeaux just over 1 hour famous for its blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc wines. St Emilion, a beautiful medieval town with gothic architecture, is a 40 min drive west and there are numerous chateaux [vineyards] offering wine tasting in the immediate area.

There are many of places of interest along the Dordogne river (in both directions) and beautiful towns and villages to explore. Canoe trips can be experienced along the river from many places.

Golf can be played at Golf des Vigiers which is a 25 min drive away in a beautiful chateaux setting .

The Atlantic coast is a 2 hour drive away with the largest sand dune in Europe. Unspoilt, windswept, white sandy Atlantic beaches prevail. The Period seaside town of Arcachon overlooks oyster beds and has superb fish restaurants and is a popular holiday destination of the French.

Sainte Foy-la-Grande

We are situated in St Avit de Soulege, and the lovely town of St Foy la Grande with all shopping facilities is only 7 kilometres away, it’s Saturday markets are the biggest in the area. Bergerac also has a market on Saturday. Canoe trips down the Dordogne can be booked from Pesssac-sur-dordogne 10 mins away.

Duras (19 kilometres) has an interesting castle, restaurants, a Monday market, extensive sports facilities and produces very good wine. There is a leisure lake at Castelgaillard near Duras with swimming, kayaking, fishing, pedaloes, huge water slides, archery, horse riding and crazy golf. Bordeaux is 1 hour 15 mins by car and the coast at Archachon with the largest sand dune in Europe at 2 hours by car.

"Beautiful house, tranquil location"

The house and pool are as beautiful as they look in the photos; extremely well equipped with lots of special touches and some lovely welcome goodies. It is such a peaceful location, well away from it all and probably the most tranquil place we have ever stayed. A car is essential but St Foy is only 10 minutes away, and both Bergerac and St Emilion are just 40 minutes drive and well worth a visit. Nothing is too much trouble for the owners who are on hand to help with anything. Thoroughly recommended for chilling out in the beautiful Dordogne countryside.

"Beautiful farmhouse renovation in tranquil setting surrounded by vineyards"

My husband and I, our teenage son and friend stayed at this wonderful property in August this year. It is in a peaceful, rural location and therefore a car is essential for access to amenities. Bergerac (35 mins away by car) and St Emilion (45 mins by car) are both very pretty and well worth a visit. There is a large LeClerc Supermarket 10 mins away by car. Canoeing along the Dordogne River is very easy to organise and only 10 mins from the Farmhouse.
Fishing on the Dordogne River is available and a daily licence can be purchased at the local shop in Pessac, 15 mins away. Bikes are available at the property. Everything needed was provided and the owners were extremely helpful and welcoming. A very good place to stay - highly recommended!

"A beautifully renovated and furnished gite surrounded by vineyards"

We stayed in August with our two young children (5 and 2) and had a truly wonderful and relaxing stay in a tranquil part of the Gironde surrounded by stunning scenery. Chris and Christine have clearly spent a lot of time and effort renovating and furnishing a dilapidated building into a fantastic holiday gite and have thought of everything with some wonderful finishing touches to the property. There are two al fresco dining areas, a veranda overlooking the vineyards directly outside the lounge and a BBQ area at the bottom of the garden, both perfect for al fresco dining with the children and then reading a book with a glass of local wine in the evening. It was in the 30's most days so the pool, which is a lovely size, was a necessity with an alarm for the safety of children. Chris and Christine allowed us to use their beautiful garden, which had a couple of tree swings and was great for a run around in the late afternoon sun. St Foy la Grande is a 10 minute drive away and is a super Bastide town on the Dordogne with a lovely old covered market area and some nice cafes and restaurants. We also ate at a nice restaurant in Gensac, which was a 5 minute drive away. St Emillion and Bergerac were both around a 45 minute drive, so great for a day trip with the children. This property exceeded my high expectations, thanks Chris and Christine, if we ever decide to holiday in the Gironde again your gite would be first on my hit list.
