Home description

A wonderful place to relax and enjoy the French countryside, in an area rich with tradition and history. The Vieux Chateau de Saint Vaast was built around 1880 on the site of an older Chateau, but was partially destroyed by Allied bombing in 1944. The remaining West Wing has been renovated to create a spacious and comfortable home with spectacular views.

There are walking and cycling paths which go through the village, with the historical towns of Dieppe and Neufchatel both 20 km away. There are several beaches within easy driving distance. Rouen, with its medieval architecture and magnificent restored Cathedral, is about 40 km to the southwest.

The Normandy / Seine-Maritime region

The lush Normandy countryside is a haven of peace and quiet , with traditional farms and fields, a landscape of undulating hills, and acres of ancient forests. There is lots to do in the area, whether you are interested in art, history, or just wandering through the beautiful countryside. The Côte d’Albâtre (Albaster Coast), is the name given to the spectacular white chalk cliffs stretch from Le Treport to Le Havre. Beneath the white cliffs, about 20km away from the village, is the fashionable seaside resort of Dieppe.

Dieppe is a wonderful place for eating fresh seafood and there are plenty of excellent restaurants. The Grande Rue hosts a market every Saturday morning, which is a great place to buy fresh local produce. You will also find lots of shopping opportunities along the side streets. The swimming pool on the seafront, which opened in 2007, is a popular place for adults and children alike. It features an large outdoor heated pool as well as an indoor area complete with water slides and fountains.

The Chateau Museum in Dieppe showcases some of the paintings by a vast range of artists who were inspired by the Normandy landscape. Normandy is known as the birthplace of Impressionism, and many paintings featured in the museum are scenes of Dieppe. At Giverny, which is about a two hour drive away, you can visit Monet's home and studio.

If you are interested in World War II history, the Normandy Landing beaches are about two hours south from the village. There is also plenty to visit in the Dieppe area, including a museum dedicated to Operation Jubilee, the ill fated Dieppe Raid of 1942. The area contains ruins of many V1 rocket launching sites. At Val Ygot, 30 minutes drive away, the preserved ruins of one site, including launching ramp, are maintained as an open air memorial museum. There are many bunkers in the area, including several in the fields behind the Chateau (unfortunately not accessible).

Our Chateau itself features in local history as it was requisitioned to become the local German Army division headquarters in 1940. After the departure of the Germans in 1944 the Chateau was deserted, however as the Canadians moved towards Paris after D-Day, liberating the valley, they shelled the building and destroyed the major part. Only the West tower was left standing.

Saint Vaast d'Equiqueville area

The village of Saint Vaast d'Equiqueville is located between Dieppe and Neufchatel, set in rural countryside about 20km from the coast. The village has a shop and Bar-Tabac which serves light meals, as well as two boulangeries. The Avenue Verte, a cycling path created from the old railway line from Dieppe to Paris, runs through the village and offers a flat and traffic-free opportunity to enjoy the beautiful countryside. This is particularly good for cycling with children, who can enjoy relative freedom on this safe path.

There are two very different Chateaux within easy cycling distance in both directions from St Vaast: towards Neufchatel (home of the heart-shaped cheese), the impressive Chateau de Mesnieres which is open for visits (approximately 10k cycle ride). The Chateau d'Arques (10k in the other direction) sits on a hill above Arques la Bataille. This is an impressive ruin, a 11th century castle built by the uncle of William the Conquerer and subsequently besieged and occupied by William himself. Bicycles can be hired locally.
