The property is a former paper mill originally built in 1688 which has been renovated into a home for the owners and 2 gites "Le Grand Cornet" and "Le Petit Raisin" (Home 1819992) which are virtually identical. The gites share their own private driveway and car park (approx 10m x 8m). They have been renovated to provide modern facilities while at the same time retaining as much of the character as possible. All the rooms are newly furnished, spacious and comfortable. Each gite has an upstairs with 3 bedrooms, sleeping 6 (2 doubles, 1 twin) and family bathroom. All the bedrooms have wall-mounted electric heaters and the bathroom has a heated towel rail. Downstairs is open plan with living room, kitchen, dining area and a cosy wood-burning stove. There is a downstairs toilet and each gite has its own private patio (approx 6m x 5m) with dining table for 6.

We have a 4m plunge pool, petanque pitch, trampoline and basketball hoop which are shared by both gites and the owners. NEW for May 2015 - an 80m2 decking area around the plunge pool with external wifi and sunloungers for you to relax and enjoy the surroundings.

The property is set in 5 acres of grounds, including garden, woodland and streams and there are ducks and free range chickens. Guests are free to explore the grounds and feed the chickens and ducks.

We are in a peaceful rural location, only a 15 minute walk to the village of Saint Severin and a 15 minute drive to the pictureque village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne., close by is a public footpath running alongside a river with an abundance of wildlife, flora and fauna. The river is popular with the local fisherman, and can be fished with a licence. Walking distance to the village of Saint Séverin which has a local SPAR supermarket, bar, bakery, pharmacy, bank with cash machine, Post Office and a newsagents. Just outside the village is an 18-hole crazy golf course and an outdoor recreation centre at Moulin de Poltrot with canoeing and tree-top zipwires. The hillside village of Aubeterre-sur-Dronne 'one of the most beautiful villages in France' is a 15 minute drive away. It is well worth a visit for its famous monolithic church and a beautiful tree-lined square with cafes and restaurants and its river beach. A short 15 minute drive from the property is a 9 hole FFG golf course, set in peaceful countryside with its own bar/restaurant and tennis courts. The market towns of Riberac, Verteillac and Chalais are all within a 30 minutes drive. Brantome the 'Venice of Perigord' is a 50 minutes drive away and makes for an interesting day out. There is a Benedictine Abbey, excellent restaurants and bars and with a beautiful river running right through it. Nearby are the underground caves at Villars and Brantome Police Horses and Friends. The capital town of Angouleme is a 45 minutes drive away and has a wide range of shops and museums to visit. Just outside is Nautilus an indoor leisure centre with swimming pools and slides. Bergerac is an hour drive away, and the old town has narrow cobbled streets and half-timbered houses. You can take an hour long boat trip on an old 'gabarres' (flat bottomed boat). The Bordeaux, Bergerac and Cognac vineyards are all within a 90 minutes drive. Many vineyards offer tastings and the opportunity to buy first rate wines at the cellar door. In Cognac, Martell, Hennessy (includes a boat ride on the Charente river) and Remy Martin (includes a train ride tour around the estate) offer tours of their cellars/estates. Also well worth visiting is the pretty hilltop town of Saint-Emilion and Montbazillac.

"Excellent for a relaxing peaceful base."

We stayed in one of two gites converted from an old paper mill. The accommodation was first class, very spacious, clean, modern and well equipped which included a dishwasher and washing machine. There were board games and dvd's for the children, also a plunge pool in the garden with chickens running around. The patio was great for relaxing in the sun or shade in the peace and quiet of the countryside. The owners were very friendly and helpful for any of your needs or information on places to visit local or afar, but never intrusive. We would definitely recommend Moulin de la Barde for a great place to stay and look forward to a return trip.

"A lovely stay in a beautifully renovated gite, in a very pretty part of France"

We had a lovely warm welcome from the on-site owners who were able to advise about where to visit in the local area. Nothing was too much trouble. Le Grand Cornet was beautifully appointed, in lovely surroundings. The gite had all mod cons, including wi-fi. Couldn't fault the accommodation! It is situated in a rural part of France, so a car is necessary but the roads are nice and quiet and there are lovely views and villages within a short drive. We visited the river beach at Aubeterre Sur Dronne, paddling with the fish, and had a tasty lunch in the very pretty village square. The market at Riberac is great for foodies! If you have children who love being outside in the fresh air this is the place for you (with TV and DVD player for those indoor moments!) Will be recommending (and hope to visit again).
