The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente region
On the Atlantic coast between the châteaux of the Loire Valley and the Bordeaux vineyards, lies Poitou-Charentes and the Vendee. This is one of the sunniest corners of the western coastline of France.
There is an astonishing average of 2250 hours of sunshine a year, making Poitou-Charentes one of the most consistently desirable places to visit in France. The warm air might give you the impression you're in the Mediterranean, the coast however with its dunes, pine forests and long beaches, are unmistakably Atlantic.
Further inland you find the River Charente and valley that epitomises rural France. The Charentes was once a busy industrial shipping inland waterway, today it's a peaceful lush land with plenty of vineyards and chateau.
There are plenty of cities and lively resorts that hold great charm and interest in the Poitou-Charentes region of France. Noirmoutier, Re, Oleron, Cognac, Poitiers and La Rochelle are all have their own appeal.
The principle town of Poitou-Charentes is La Rochelle, which is one of the prettiest and most distinctive towns in France. It is worth noting that the coast around La Rochelle is great for family holidays with shallow waters and miles of safe beaches. This historic and pretty town now has a modern marina that compliments the old port, and the waterfront restaurants are always busy and are of a high quality. And perched on a hilltop overlooking two rivers, Poitiers for its ecclesiastical architecture and history is worth a day trip at least.
Just northwest of Poitou-Charentes lies the rural department of the Vendee. The Vendee is dramatically crossed by four rivers, the Sèvre Nantaise, the Vendée, the Lay and the Sèvre Niortaise (which is over 150km long). The coast of the Vendée stretches to over 160km of mostly sandy beaches, many of them surprisingly unpopulated.
The Vendee has an exceptionally mild climate, that has long attracted large numbers tourists from France and abroad. Some of the more popular resorts include Les Sables d'Ollone, La Tranche-sur-Mer and St Jean de Monts. Several of the Vendee’s beaches are "blue flagged" for cleanliness.
Inland, the chief attractions include the Marais Poitevin (an area of marshlands famed for wildlife), the forested area around the village of Mervent, the rolling countryside of the Bocage and the historical theme park at the Puy du Fou. However, the main attraction and focus of the Vendee is the 90 kilometre stretch of coast between scenic Ile de Noirmoutier, and the stylish and chic Les Sables-d'Olonne. Les Sables-d'Olonne is popular with the Parisians and has an excellent art collection. And Ile de Noirmoutier was a monastic settlement in the 7th century and now is one of France's premier tourist resorts.
Cognac is made in the Charente so a trip to the medieval town is always interesting! This locally produced spirit is world famous. And the great food speciality of the Vendee and Poitou-Charentes is oysters.
With the climate, history and cuisine, Vendee and Poitou-Charentes is among the most popular holiday chateau destinations in France.
