The Limousin / Auvergne / Creuse region

Creuse has inherited the name of its river which runs across the department from the northeast to the northwest. It was the clear waters of the Creuse that enabled Aubusson to become a centre for making coloured dyes - used for tapestries & rugs. Tapestry production was at its height in the 16th & 17th centuries. The area was also known for its skilled builders who learned their trade working the local granite. These skilled men were largely responsible for the urbanisation of Paris.
The area has plateaux's, forests, lakes & rivers - attracting visitors in search of the great outdoors. The Creuse is on the north-western border of the Massif Central. The land in the southeast rises to more than 3000 ft. Famous painters of the Impressionist period regularly visited the village of Crozant and surrounding areas in the north-west of the department. Artists included Monet and Armand Guillaumin.
The Saint Priest La Plaine area
Walking distance for bread. 5 minute drive to local village with bar, restaurant & shops. 20 minutes to Wolf Park & Giant Maze. 30 minutes to beaches with watersports on the lake. 10 minutes to horse riding. 45 minutes to the city of Limoges with aquarium, zoo, the old town and many shops and restaurants.
Saint Priest La Plaine is less than a minutes drive or a 10 minute walk. There is a small pretty church, a post office and a bakery that is open every morning and sells a few other bits and bobs.
Le Grand Bourg is less than a 5 minute drive and has a pharmacy, bank, post office, church, bakery, butcher, general store, florist, bar, restaurant & pizzeria.
La Souterraine is 15 minutes away and has another lovely church, cobbled streets with cafes, a market on saturday morning, a few shops and pretty park plus an indoor pool and sports centre and some large supermarkets, banks, garden centres etc.
Gueret is 20 minutes away and is the capital of the Creuse. There you will find a much bigger choice of bars, restaurants and shops as well as a cinema with original version films.
Paris is just 2 and a half hours on the fast train from La Souterraine and so can easily be done as a one night city break from our house.
We are happy to recommend many things for you to do while you're here and will provide you maps and addresses, to make it as easy as possible for you.

Guestbook for Muck to Merlot
What a wonderful place and what a wonderful time we had here. We visited in October 2010, the weather shone down on us and made this perfect setting stunning. My 6 year old son, spent every second of every day fully emersing himself in all the 'Boy's own' fun to be had on the farm. Whenever he was out of sight, he was to be found petting a duck or chicken, running through the fields with Red the dog or just investigating one of the many barns or outbuildings. Each morning was a pleasure to wake up in such a beautifully peaceful place. A truely restfull holiday for the adults with loads of organic, natural entertainment for the kids. A win win situation all round. Thanks to Hannah and Stuart for their faboulous hosting. Look forward to coming back again soon, bringing the rest of the family this time. Mrs J Pound.
