About the home

• The gite has all the comforts of modern living, including wi-fi, yet retains many of its original features including exposed beams and stone walls. There is a wood burning fire in the living room, which is lovely to come back to after a long walk in the nearby woods on those early spring or autumn visits.

• Wi-fi is available at no extra charge.

• The property has a lovely private rear terrace as well as access to the pool on the sunny, south facing terrace.

• For those who like horse riding or walking this area is paradise. The area has many miles of walks and bridleways, some of which start quite literally from the front door.

• This gite has an open plan kitchen-lounge opening on to a sunny terrace.

• Upstairs there are 2 bedrooms, sleeping up to 4 people.

Further details outdoors:
• Secluded swimming pool (shared with guests from other two gites) with child proof security cover, which also keeps the pool lovely and warm. The pool is set back 50 yards from the house and is totally private with stunning south facing views of the mountains. There is a jacuzzi in the pool.

• The gardens are full of fruit trees (kiwi, apples, plum) and nuts (walnuts, pine etc) with winding paths and the sound of streams running through the land.

• The gite has it's own outside barbeque.

Further details

• Changeover day : Saturday preferred but we will try to be flexible wherever possible.

• The gite is available from 4.00pm on the day of arrival, and should be vacated by 10.00am on the day of departure.

• For winter bookings, logs for the woodburner are supplied and included in the cost of your rental. All linen and towels are included.

Conditions

• A deposit of EUR 100 per week, per gite is required to secure a booking. The balance is due 30 days before check in.

• A security deposit of EUR 100 per gite is required 30 days before check in. The security deposit is returned within 5 working days of check out.

• All credit cards are accepted via my Pay Pal account, or else direct bank transfer (I have a French bank account for this).

• All payments are taken in Euros.

Far reaching views over lush, rugged countryside

The Languedoc-Roussillon / Herault region

• Languedoc literally means "language of yes" – langue d'oc – but obviously something goes missing in translation. "Oc" was how the Occitan-speaking inhabitants of this part of south-west France said "yes", as opposed to northerners who said "oïl". Now, everyone says "oui" – apart from Catalan speakers in the southern province of Roussillon, who say "si", just to confuse things further.

• But then, who would expect anything straightforward about a region that is filled with extraordinary riches and has such a complicated history? Languedoc-Roussillon has always been more down-to-earth than its eastern neighbour, and this is reflected in a landscape that ranges from rugged mountains to vine-covered hills and plains, down to its vast coast. Its turbulent history has seen religious persecution, farmers' revolts and an attempt to eradicate the Occitan language.

• Yet it's also home to one of France's most dynamic cities, Montpellier, which has the world's oldest continuously operating university. The Roman cities of Nîmes and Narbonne wear their long history comfortably while retaining a typically southern, relaxed ambience. Carcassonne combines its workaday lower town with the medieval Cité, which was practically a ruin until it was restored – some say too enthusiastically – in the 19th century. Yes, it's full of tourists, but even the shops selling tat can't destroy the evocative atmosphere.

• Head further south, and you reach the capital of French Catalonia: Perpignan, one of the most pleasing cities in which to amble about. And then there's the seemingly endless coastline.

The Saint Pons-de-Thomieres area

• Further into the hills, the Parc Naturel Regional du Haut Languedoc is spread over a vast area of valleys and forests, criss-crossed by dozens of well-maintained and clearly signposted walking trails.

• The pretty mountain village of St-Pons-de-Thomieres is home of the Parc HQ.

• A few miles east, the medieval Olargues is one of the prettiest in the region, sitting on the slopes of a lush river valley above a 13th Century single-span stone bridge and overlooked by a thousand-year-old bell tower.

• If the summer sun gets too hot then you can always plunge underground into one of Languedoc's vast limestone caverns. The Gouffre Geant de Cabrespine, in the Clamoux valley, is one of the largest and offers a short tour or a five-hour underground excursion with Safaris Souterrains for the more adventurous (www.showcaves.com).

• The Grotte de Limousis, about half and hour's drive from Montpellier, and the Grotte de la Deveze, near St Pons, are good alternatives.

• La Ferme des Coumayres is half way between Toulouse and Montpellier, with budget airlines flying from Carcassonne and Béziers which is less than an hour's drive away.

• From Béziers airport take the D612 towards St. Pons de Thomières and just before reaching that town, turn right onto the D908 towards Riols. After 5 minutes you will reach the village of Riols - turn left onto the D57 towards Bordeveielle where you should see a signpost to Les Coumayres. It's just 10 minutes up the mountain.
