The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Charente Maritime region
The Charente Maritime area of France is situated on the west coast between Nantes and Bordeaux. Charente Maritime nearly boasts as much sunshine as the French Riviera. This is a beautiful region of France where vineyards, oyster farms, beaches abound, not to mention historic places and Romanesque churches.
Safe family beaches with calm waters or endless wild sandy beaches, lined by sand dunes and pine forests, a paradise for nature lovers or watersports enthusiasts, we have them all!
These beaches offer a wide range of watersports (windsurfing, sailing, pedaloes, jet-ski in Royan, etc) The aptly named “Wild Coast” - “La Côte Sauvage” stretches out from Saint-Palais to Ronce-les Bains: famous for its waves, it is the meeting point of surfers.
The region is also famous for its cultural heritage: medieval Romanesque churches of all kinds abound. Saintes was one of the halts on the Santiago de Compostella pilgrim route.
The old harbour and the city of La Rochelle, the citadel of Brouage, Rochefort and its maritime heritage, Saintes and its Roman ruins, the pretty town of Talmont, near the Gironde estuary are but a few examples of the cultural wealth of the region.
Last but not least, discover our typical products: try tasty Charentais melons, grown in open fields Charentaise "galette", fish, shellfish (oysters and mussels are famous here), salt from the local marshes, local wines, Pineau and Cognac ! The vineyards of Cognac are worth a visit.
Saint Palais sur Mer area
*Seaside resort of grand character on the Atlantic coast, just a stone's throw from Royan with its gentle and sunny climate...
*Wide pine forests, five sandy beaches and leafy streets lined with belle-epoque villas...
*Young and vibrant with the fun and attractions of a major summer destination - there's always something going on at Saint-Palais-sur-mer, and there's something for everyone!
*An all-year-round relaxing environment makes Saint-Palais-sur-mer the destination of choice for holidays, weekends and short breaks with family or friends...
* The Beaches of Saint-Palais-sur-Mer (http://www.bernezac.com/StPalais_general_uk.htm) There are four beaches. From the quietest to the more animated, there is a beach to suit everyone in Saint-Palais-sur-Mer. Everyone can be happy there.
*Getting away from the beaches, St Palais offers a different face, more reserved but just as authentic.
-Visit the twelfth century Roman church with its exhibitions.
-Check out the quarters of town that were neighbouring villages in times past - the dwellings of farmers and winegrowers. Today they're highly prized locations in which to live for the locals: Courlay, Maine Bertrand, la Ganipote, la Palud, Puyravaud.
-Here you'll get a feel for the side of St Palais more in tune with the lesser known, gentler and more discreet character of the Charentes.
*In the Platin and Nauzin quarters of town you'll find youself surrounded by sumptuous villas called 'fantasies' and the slightly more modest 'chalets' built by rich holiday makers at the turn of the 20th century - the period known in French lore as the 'Belle Epoque'.
