About the home

The cottage, awarded 3 epis and 4 stars for comfort and charm, is situated in the quiet village of St Michel le Cloucq, 5 kms from Fontenay le Comte, 50 kms from La Rochelle and the beaches of the Atlantic.
A rustic cottage fully restored to its original appearance, with exposed local stone walls, wooden beams and wooden floors, tiled ground floor. It is furnished with antique French country style furniture. It is comfortable and done with good taste.

The ground floor has a large living/room with a fireplace, a kitchen/dining room, bathroom and separate washroom, utility room..
There are 2 bedrooms and one mezzanine room. One bedroom is on the ground floor with a large double bed (160cm), TV, DVD player and an en suite with shower, sink and WC. The other bedroom is upstairs with a double bed (140cm). The mezzanine is also upstairs, enclosed on three sides, and has two 3/4 beds (120cm) - an ideal room for children.
We provided bedding and we make the beds fresh for when you arrive.
There is 1 bathroom with bath and sink. There is also a separate WC and an en suite shower room in the downstairs bedroom with shower, sink and WC. Bath towels, hand towels, flannels and bath mats are provided. The bathrooms are fitted electric heated towel rails.
A cot, highchair and baby bath can be provided on request.

For a restful and enjoyable stay, you find a private garden, a stone patio with garden furniture, a large outdoor dining area with a purpose built chimney-barbecue, a private garden. 4 mountain bicycles for adults and 3 mountain bicycles for children are available free of charge.

Prices are per week and vary depending on the time of year. We require a down payment of 25% the total cost on booking. We ask for a security deposit of 250 EUR when you arrive which will be returned when you leave assuming there has been no damage to the property. In winter there is an extra charge for heating.
Bookings are from 4pm Saturday until 10 am the following Saturday. At certain times of year and for last minute bookings arrival and departure days are flexible. Please contact us for more information.

The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region

Discover the charm of both South Vendée and Marais Poitevin and their rich heritage: Nieul sur l'Autize Abbey, Maillezais Abbey, roman churches, the renaissance town of Fontenay le Comte, the slow-paced lifestyle, boat rides in Marais Poitevin or hiking in the large forested Vendée region of Mervent-Vouvant.
You could spend your holiday visiting the well known sites such as Puy de Fou, the Futuroscope theme park or Fort Boyard, the sea and the Atlantic coast, beaches in Faute sur Mer, Tranche sur Mer and Sables d'Olonne or La Rochelle and Ile de Ré, which are not too far from our gite.
Our nearest large town is Fontenay Le Comte which is a 5 minute drive away, and used to be the capital of the Vendee.
La Rochelle is a very attractive port with waterside cafes and restaurants offering relaxing breaks with Europe’s largest Aquarium which is open every day, Museums, and a daily fish market.
The South Vendée enjoys one of the sunniest climates in France. The sublime beaches of the Vendée are within easy reach (60 minutes), and are some of the best in Europe. Clean, with shallow, gently sloping seas, these are particularly suitable for families.

The Saint Michel le Cloucq area

The village is on the edge of a large forest and there are lots of places to walk and cycle. Less than 5 kms from the house is the River Vendée where you can fish and there is good fishing and boating on the canals of Le Marais Poitevin (12 kms). Lac de Chassenon has a beach with supervised swimming.
There are several footpaths and cycle paths leading from the house.
Mervent adventure park is a must for children and adults and is only 15 mins away.
The village of Vouvant was voted the prettiest village in the Vendee with spectacular views

The cottage is about an hour away from Nantes, La Rochelle and Poitiers airports.. Nantes is served by Ryanair flights from Leeds Bardford and East Midlands.

La Rochelle is served by Ryanair flights from London Stansted , Dublin and Cork. Jet 2 fly to La Rochelle from Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh.

The cottage is also convenient for self drive customers driving from either the short channel crossings or by the overnight Brittany Ferries Portsmouth to St Malo route which is ideal.
Port of St Malo is 3 hour drive, Caen is approx 4 and a quarter hours, Le Havre is 4 and a half hour drive
Take the Eurostar/TGV from London or Ashford to La Roche sur Yon (35mins drive), Nantes(1hr drive), Poitiers (1hr), Niort (45 mins) or La Rochelle (1h)

“Excellent & charming Gite - well equipped” We really enjoyed our 2 weeks here - the gite was full of charm and character, but very well equipped with all modern appliances in the kitchen, etc - all the extra things which really make a difference to a holiday rental. Satellite TV was useful occasionally to keep up with BBC news, plus WiFi was a bonus for e-mails/internet. 2 of us, so we only used the downstairs (biggest) bedroom with the ensuite shower, but the other rooms upstairs looked lovely - especially the mezzanine floor with 2 single beds and sloping ceiling which I imagine children would love! Lovely private gardens, with 2 nice sun terraces to eat on, plus the open-sided barn area with the chimney bbq for a leisurely meal on a summer evening. Fontenay-Le-Comte is a pretty town, and well stocked with quaint shops, supermarkets, bars and restaurants. Plenty to do in the area - best beach was at La Terriere - head to La Tranche sur Mer, but then as you arrive, turn right and follow signs to La Terriere - easy to find the beach which is huge, and lovely and quiet. Also go boating on the Marais Poitevin canals, starting from the Abbey at Maillezais - well organised there and routes of 1 or 2 hours with map given - feels ever so romantic on the tiny canals, and a lovely way to spend an afternoon. La Rochelle & Ile de Re are stunning and definitely worth a visit. Chantal, the owner, is quite charming - very friendly and helpful, but not obtrusive. The welcome gifts of bread, jam and chocolates were much appreciated.

“Fantastic Gite with everything you need” We had a lovely week at this wonderful gite. It has everything you need and is well situated for all the local attractions. Would recommend it to anyone, especially the bbq area where we spent many a happy night enjoying great food and wine. The owner is on hand for anything you need and the cherry tree in the garden was a bonus.Plenty of areas to sit out in the private garden area.
