About this location
The Basse-Normandie region
This part of Normandy is an area of green fields, forests and lakes. It has great cities like Caen with it's castle and abbeys, Bayeux for the tapestry and cathedral, Cherbourg, Falaise and more. Famous for Cidre, Calvados and the local cuisine, Lower Normandy also offers visitors a wealth of places to visit - grand houses and gardens, beaches, D-day sites, beautiful coastal towns like Honfleur and Granville, castles, abbeys and so much more.
The northern coast (less than 90 minutes drive) is where the allies landed for the D-day invasion and there are many sites, museums and places to visit if you are interested in the history of the war here in 1944.
The border with Brittany is less than an hour away. Cities like Rennes and ports like St. Malo are easily visited for day trips. The coast between Avranches and St. Malo is famous for Oysters and Mussels. The town of Cancale even has an Oyster museum and many restaurants serving you wonderful fresh seafood.
The property is situated in an area of forests and lakes with small towns offering great food and every amenity. Great for walking, cycling, golf and day trips to beaches, museums and chateaux. For a spectacular day out, Le Mont Saint Michel is within an hour's drive, as is Bayeux, Caen and St. Malo.
Most days have a market in a local village, shops are 5 minutes away and big supermarkets are 20 minutes by car. The closest large town is Vire and Avranches is 30 minutes away. The local area is known as the 'Bocage' for it's fields and the distinctive earth bank boundaries and also for granite quarrying and finishing (the village even has a museum). North of Vire are the Gorges De Vire - valleys and rocky hills - there is even a bungee jumping and outdoor pursuit centre at Caumont L'Evente. July and August sees most villages holding fetes which might feature music, parades, competitions and, often, firework displays.
Vire has a good Aqua centre for swimming etc and Brecey (15 minutes drive) has a Parc De Loisirs for outdoor fun. The Forest of
Saint Sever (10 minutes) has a lake, the remains of a castle (just the earthworks), a Hermitage and is also perfect for walks and picnics. 20 minutes away is Mortain with it's waterfalls, abbey and chapel - and a site of remembrance for US troops who fought a key battle there in 1944.
