The Poitou-Charentes/Vendee region
The Charente is a mainly agricultural department, and is well irrigated with many rivers. It has the reputation of being the second sunniest area of France, after the Mediterranean coast. The west of the Charente is dominated by vineyards, being the home of cognac, but the eastern part is influenced by many hills and valleys, and a lot of forests. It contains hamlets at every turn, of which Artenac is one of the oldest.
The principal city of the department is Angoulême, which has a very historic centre, within the old city walls, but is now a modern extended town with everything you could wish for, including Nautilus, (a swimming, sailing, skating centre), the Musée de la Bande Desinée (Cartoon Museum) and a printing museum, the cathdral and the castle, which is now the town hall. The centre of Angoulême is full of shops, bars and cafés, but also has shopping centres on the outskirts.
Visits to cognac factories are possible in Cognac, Jarnac and other centres. Sailing and swimming are possible at the Lacs de Haute Charente in the summer, there are several horse riding centres in the area, and rambling and cycling are popular pastimes. For history lovers, a visit to the large Roman baths complex at Chassenon is recommended, as well as a look at local chateaux in la Rochefoucauld, Verteuil-sur-Charente and Bayers.
Saint Mary, Charente
St Mary is one of the smallest communes in France, but still has a few local enterprises (including a hairdresser), and activities, including a small library, a large bric-à-brac fair on the 3rd Sunday of June, bingo for the Commune and for the local school in the early spring, and occasional sporting events such as volleyball and pétanque competitions. There are regular rambles organised by the local association, and fishing is available in our local river, the Bonnieure (licence required).
