To return to the cottage, the original house is recorded as being built before Napoleon Bonaparte arrived in France from Corsica.
Now this charming, solid stone house has been tastefully extended, updated and insulated to modern standards so is ready to provide modern comforts with a proper shower-room, top-of-the-range heating, modern appliances, a brand new washing machine and free WiFi.
Retaining it's ancient charm, the massive stone walls guarantee it stays cool in the heat of summer, or with the choice of both a log burner and a new highly efficient heating, it stays warm and cosy during the cooler months.
Plus fine quality soft furnishings to provide all the year round comfort.
Local amusements for families:
The ideal place for both adults and children within easy reach of Monternon is Futurescope ( http://en.futuroscope.com/ ). With so much to see so it is probably more than a 1 day visit. On the way to Futurescope you will pass the large and very impressive 15th century moated Château de Bourg Archambault. You then pass through the charming town of Montmorillon. It has a very interesting heritage and architecture, is described as The Town of the Written Word and has a volcanic mineral named after it. the town is set on a river and has many ancient buildings, churches, interesting shops and restaurants and an impressive 15th century bridge over the river Gartempe . ( http://www.tourisme-montmorillon.fr/monuments.php )
About 25 minutes from your Monternon base is Snake Island at La Trimouille with 60 species including alligators, caiman alligators, monitor lizards, snakes, tortoises, lizards, crocodiles, chameleons and mongoose. La Trimouille is a pretty village with a river running through it. At Chauvigny (approx 1 hour from Monternon ) you have Giants of the Sky ( http://www.geantsduciel.com/GDC-UK/index.php ) it is set in the ruins of a Chateau and has amazing displays with many birds of prey.
Many of our visitors with family spend a few days on the beach or in the pool at Lac de Mondon which is only 10 or 15 minutes east of Monternon. Google shows you images of the lake and the large open park (free of charge), the swimming pool, the café restaurant etc, There is also another smaller lake at Chaillac which is only 10+ minutes north of Monternon.( http://www.chaillac36.fr/index.php?start=3 ) There are many other amusements and interesting places nearby including the fascinating city of Limoges which is an historic and extremely diverse city, set on the Vienne River and with so much to see really well worth visiting. It is described as the city of art and history (http://www.limoges-tourisme.com) and has is tourist train to take you around the city, an indoor aquarium, many historical buildings, a porcelain museum, many porcelain shops, more super shops and restaurants plus so much more.( http://www.limoges-tourisme.com/ )
About a 15 minute drive from Monternon is Les Herolles. Here one of the largest open-air markets in France is held every month. There are many hundreds of stands selling everything you can imagine plus a large, traditional animal and poultry market with horses, sheep, goats, rabbits, ducks, geese etc - this is a must see.

FABULOUS, RELAXING ENVIRONMENT. This part of the beautiful Haute Vienne countryside has an extremely low population is very green and rustic, so is the very best place to discover the authentic, genuine France. There are fantastic rivers, many vast lakes, large open woodlands and forests nearby with traditional country markets and ancient Chateaux to visit.
Also a visit to les Herolles, "FRANCE'S LARGEST OPEN MARKET" within only 20 minutes away is a must! As is the a giant outdoor antiques and bric-a-brac street market which usually takes place on the first Sunday of every month in Limoges - just an hour away, with superb local restaurants it makes a memorable and fabulous day out.
Your hosts are friends with the owner of the local, private carp lake so fishermen are usually made very welcome (subject to season and availability). Also just 30 minutes to the north is the Brenne National Park with an amazing 1000 lakes, masses of wildlife including deer and wild boar with well over 200 species of birds recorded - another well kept secret!
A day spent in Argenton 30 minutes to the north would be a full and rewarding day out. There is lots to see perhaps starting with a visit to the indoor market, then a wander through the beautifully presented Roman settlement Argentomagus. Then a light lunch followed by a walk along the impressive river Creuse and through the ancient town then a relaxing dinner at one the very many delightful but surprisingly inexpensive restaurants in the town. You could even catch a train for a trip to Paris from here!
Our cottage is located in a tranquil cul-de-sac in a quite quarter but is very easy to reach from all parts of the world. It also has all the essentials such as many excellent restaurants offering plat de jour at bargain prices, a la carte or fresh pizza. There are also supermarkets, bars, shops, doctors, pharmacy, bakers, hairdressers etc nearby. The nearest restaurant and bar is only a 5 minute drive away at St Martin le Mault where children are made very welcome and they speak a little English!
The tranquil and picturesque River Benaize (shown in the slide-show) is only a 5 minute stroll from the cottage and gently flows through quiet, peaceful woodlands. There you may take leisurely walks along the river. Perhaps you may be lucky enough to share the serenity of the dappled shade of the woods with one or more of the many wild deer to be found there.
LOTS TO DO - PLACES TO GO - BEST OF BOTH WORLDS - THE PERFECT CENTRAL LOCATION. Your French base is located in an idyllic setting but you are still within easy reach of fast modern motorways (20 minutes) and busy international airports (55 minutes).
Rentals may be paid in UK Pounds, Euros, US$, Australian$, Canadian$ and many other currencies and fixed regardless of currency fluctuations. (see below for details)
MINIMUM LET IS 1 WEEK (Saturday to Saturday)

"This cottage and the whole area is under rated"
We have stayed in this cottage more than once. The close proximity of the cottage to Limoges, the airport ,and so many places of interest makes it very convenient for us. The cottage, is very comfortable and spacious, and we have shared time there with friends before going off on our respective adventures. There's lots of space to park cars etc. This area is real 'country style' France and the local Relais ( a sort of pub type restaurant) is great and there are many other local delights to experience entwined into some magnificent walks. The owners are very approachable in respect to their tariffs, and are a great source of information of France in general. We have been able to negotiate a very cheap rate to secure the cottage whilst we spent time, in our case, in the UK and visiting friends for a few days in southern France. Its great to have a 'base' and be able to come and go and feel free to explore Europe in the knowledge that you can leave all that 'stuff' behind. We hope to go back yet again in 2013.

"Good potential, but a long way to go"
Nice garden at the front,no garden furniture.Back garden needed to be tidied up old chairs and radiators dumped there again no garden furniture .No washing machine as advertised in literature. Third bedroom, not fit, High frosted window, no wardrobe and hot water boiler in the room. No hangers in wardrobes. Kitchen; new cooker and fridge and plenty cupboard space, breakfast bar for two only. Cutlery & utensils need replacing, no serving dishes or spoons. No iron or ironing board, no mop or bucket. Sitting room new furniture, TV fine, but antique cupboards took up too much room. No information at all on house keeping-Eg where to put rubbish..recycle etc.? Also no information on the area.
To maintain our high standards, it was necessary to replace the washing machine which was becoming unreliable. Delivery of the new replacement was delayed until shortly after this guest departed. In addition we have now installed a new, top quality dish washer. There are in fact a total of 8 additional metal or cane framed chairs to be used with the garden table. This is in addition to the 6 dining chairs. To provide maximum comfort for our guests, all these garden chairs have been specially upholstered in a charming, soft fabric. Accordingly these are available in the house for guests to use with the garden table as they wish. Yes, the ironing board and iron are in the kitchen with house-keeping instructions prominently placed to help guests to also find the dust pan, the mop and the bucket. All wardrobes have many, good quality wooden hangers, including the wardrobe in the small bedroom. Other guests have remarked how useful the solid oak and antique wall cupboards are for additional, secure storage space for valuables, effects and clothes. They have never, ever been described as intrusive.
