The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
Where is the Vendee : The Vendee lies between the Côte d'Argent and Brittany but with a character all of its own. The Atlantic Coast stretches 140 km, full of fine white sandy beaches with an amazing 210 days sunshine per year, a record rivalling that of the south of France.
The Vendée coast is renowned for its luminosity and is called locally "LA COTE DE LA LUMIERE"... The Vendée is rich with many museums, castles and heritage centres to visit.
It is a land of naturally preserved space with a variety of pleasures such as sandsurfing, horse riding, golfing, watersports and Spa Thalassotherapy centres offering revitalising salt water cures. The Vendée is reclaimed land and therefore flat and riddled with creeks, vast beaches and sand dunes inviting you to relax. In the dusk, fine pleasure ports transform into lively, welcoming stopovers with a variety of museums, gardens, festivals, folklore pageants and magnificent evening shows.
The region is covered with working salt marshes, oyster beds, potato fields, vineyards and provides a wealth of seafood. The Vendée offers colourful beauty and a variety of countryside from farmlands to the local marshes and Marais Poitevin Marshes, from forests, the sea and villages with their colourful markets selling the local speciality "Brioche Vendéenne" (a type of bread with a sweet taste). One can relive the past by visiting cloisters, abbeys, inhabited Château and the picturesque surroundings encompassed by magnificent windmills. You couldn't have a better setting for seaside fun, plenty of space on the gently sloping beaches where you can cool off, or picnic in the fragrant pine woods which sweep down to the sand dunes. Market days in the Vendee
The Saint Jean de Monts area
The climate is wonderful with over 200 days of sunshine and over 2,500 hours of sun. Even from early spring and late autumn the weather is very mild and has warm breezes.
The new town by the sea with its esplanade and cafes, is separated from the old town by wooded dunes and a vast forest of pine trees. In the evening, you can enjoy wandering along the esplanade and the lively Avenue de la Mer, the pedestrian road leading to the beach.
During the summer season St Jean has everything you would expect of a bustling beach town with many things to do and see.In the old town, the Church of St Jean Baptiste has been rebuilt in local style with exotic wood on its bell tower. The "Forêt domaniale" has over 750 hectares of maritime pines, acacias, green oak trees planted by Napoleon III, crisscrossed by many footpaths and cycle paths.
You can also visit the forest on horse back, and you will even find an Adventure park through the trees.Several concerts and shows are organised during each summer, and there are many art exhibitions in the Palais des Congres. The town offers many restaurants where you will discover the specialities of Vendee , such as the « Mogettes » - beans served with famous braised ham of Vendee- an archetypal meal of Vendee! You will have the choice between oysters from Bouin, Beauvoir or Noirmoutier, scampis, crabs, shrimps and whelks that are daily fished offshore, or even « pignons » (little shells that you can yourselves collect in the sand on the beach). Enjoy the sardines from St Gilles Croix de Vie, the sole and the bass, without forgetting the « civelle » (a young eel). Frog legs and grilled eels are part of the most ancient and famous dishes of the marshes. Do not miss the "brioche" of Vendee, and the traditional desserts like the custard tart of the marshes (flan vendeen), or the "Caillebottes" cow cottage cheese to eat cool with sugar or honey.Going South from Saint Jean you can visit Saint Gilles Croix de Vie, a boating centre as well as a great, sandy, seaside resort, full of interesting shops and markets in a pedestrian area.Beaches.Saint Jean de Monts is flanked by 8 kilometres of beautiful long, fine sandy beaches with excellent water quality. St Jean de Monts has a "blue flag" award for its sea water. The beach is accessible to everyone, it shelves very gently and the waves are small.Plage des Demoiselles : the most southerly beach between Saint Jean de Monts and Saint Hilaire de Riez (1 lifeguard post).La Grande Plage : bordered, in part by the esplanade and in part by cycle tracks (2 lifeguard posts).Plage de la Base Nautique : behind the landing stage (1 lifeguard post).Plage du Golf : animals permitted (1 lifeguard post).Plage de la Davière : animals permitted.Plage de la Parée du Jonc : animaux permitted (1 lifeguard post).Plage des Tonnelles : animals permitted (1 lifeguard post).Plage du Pont d'Yeu : animals permitted. Apartment was well equipped and comfortable. This was our first trip abroad with our little girl so having reception staff that spoke English was a safety net in case we ran into any problems. Didn't need to contact them. Had outdoor furniture which we made use of. Pool was closed as it was still early in season. Loved St Jean de Monts. Would definately recommend hiring bikes as very flat and safe cycle lane away from road traffic. Beach was just fabulous. Lots of places to cycle to. Nice shops and resturantsto choose from along the front. Will definately return. |
