The Poitou-Charentes / Vendee / Vendee region
For those who want to explore further afield, the Vendee region is extremely cycle-friendly with almost 500 miles of picturesque cycle paths along the coast. Closer to home, families can hire canopy covered pedal cars to explore St Jean de Monts, or take the Velo Rail along 10km of disused rail track through beautiful countryside. Other must-sees include the plush Ile de Noirmutier, linked to the coast by a three-mile causeway that is only passable at low tide. The island has excellent individual shops, vibrant restaurants, wonderful ancient houses and a 12th century abbey. A superb day-trip destination is Puy du Fou, a medieval theme park where you can relive 2,000 years of French history through smoky, live spectaculars. It is made up of 'villages' from different eras, there is a 600 seat Roman stadium and there are shows of gladiators, vikings, falconry, jousting, magic and music.
The Saint Jean de Monts area
Le Bois Masson is a large, lively family favourite, with plenty of facilities andentertainment on-site and some magnificent Vendee beaches close by. The popular plage at St Jean de Monts is a favourite because of its space, fine soft sand and safe waters, and there is a watersports outlet to hire sand yachts, catamarans, canoes and windsurfers. Le Bois Masson has its own health and wellbeing spa, indoor and outdoor pools, waterslides, sports pitches, restaurant, bar and nightclub.
