The Aquitaine / Dordogne / Landes region

Aquitaine is in the South West corner of France and is an area of long sandy beaches, pine forests, valleys and medieval towns. Its stretches from the Massif Central in the north down to the Basque border with Spain in the south. Inland are the beautiful areas of Lot-et -Garonne and the Dordogne.
The South West of France is famed for its cuisine with the fine wines of Bordeaux, the surrounding vineyards and picturesque towns such as St Emilion. Landes is renowned for its duck and goose foie gras, confit, pates and terrines. St Jean de Luz is known for fresh fish and seafood second to none and oysters from Archachon are the best. Bayonne is famous for its ham and lastly Perigord for the truffle.
The area is one of the largest and most historic in France and for centuries has had links with England through trade. We liked their wine quite a bit!!
Popular attractions are:- Bordeaux, a world heritage site, with the Aquitaine vineyards and chateaux. Archachon and the Dune de Pilat. Landes with its pine forests, beaches and trails. The fiery Basque country where the mountains meet the sea and the tiny villages in typical Basque style. Biarritz and St Jean de Luz are popular seaside resorts near the border with Spain. Bearn, and its elegant capital Pau, give a whole new area to explore inland with the picturesque towns of Salies-De-Bearn and Sauveterre-de-Bearn, the fortified wall town on the Gave d'Oloron.
The Saint-Jean-de-Marsacq area
St Jean de Marsacq is a small village with church, popular restaurant, school and small store. This is ideal for fresh bread, croissants and milk. The locals play boules outside the village hall and all the town gather frequently throughout the summer for fêtes and feasts. The village centre is a 5-10 minute walk.
For a larger range of shops and amenities, St Vincent de Tyrosse is 5 minutes by car. There is an excellent supermarket, boucherie, poissonerie, florist etc and weekly market on Friday mornings. St Vincent de Tyrosse also holds the Course Landaise in the bullring throughout the summer. This is the local and more humane form of Spanish bullfighting.
St Jean de Marsacq is 20 minutes from Hossegor with its fabulous beaches and international surf festivals. Hossegor has great boutique shopping, bars and restaurants, and the top ranking Hossegor golf course. Closer is the even more stunning Golf de Seignosse. Set amongst pine forests it has been voted the best golf course in France by the Association of British Tour Operators for France and is in the world's Top 50 courses.
For smaller children, or those that don't like the larger waves that make it great for surfing, there is a large inland salt-water lake. Hossegor has been a popular resort since the 1930's and grand houses were built along the lake's edge. There is a sandy beach with pedalos to hire. The lake is also to home to oyster beds and the fresh oysters are for sale around the lake.
The World Pro surfing championships are held In Hossegor every year around August although the water stays warm enough to swim and surf through Autumn. In fact, the 200km or so of unspoilt coastline along the Cote Landaise and Cote D'Argent has something to offer everyone including cycling through the pine forests, walking, kayaking, canoeing, paddle boarding and kite-surfing.
There are cultural interests to enjoy in the stunning cities of Biarritz, Bayonne, St Jean de Luz and Dax. Biarritz and Bayonne have a wealth of historical influence in France plus great cuisine and up-market shopping. The border with Spain is less than an hour away and the Basque towns of St Jean de Luz and St Sebastian are hugely recommended. The Guggenheim museum in Bilbao is worth the visit.
Both Biarritz and Dax are natural spa towns with renowned thalassotherapy centres.
Follow the Pyrenean foothills inland to enjoy spectacular scenery and wildlife. You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the Pyrenean brown bear.
